EVO Triangle - not impressed!
« on: June 15, 2013, 07:01:49 pm »
Having read this review I thought I'd give it a blast as its start at Pentrefoelas is about 9 miles from where I am staying in Wales.

http://www.greatestdrivingroads.com/great_roads/The_Evo_Triangle.html

All I can say is I was left thoroughly underwhelmed with it. The best section of the road is without doubt the A543. If the whole triangle had been like that then it would have been a better drive.

But still certainly not what I would call one of the greatest driving roads. The scenery isn't stunning either. I'll get some pics of the A5 going towards Bethesda. Now that is stunning scenery and a great driving section of road.

All in all if you are nearby then fine drive it. Don't expect much different from most other A/B roads in the UK. Certainly don't go out of your way to drive it.

I'd rate it a 4/10. The guy that wote the review above needs a slap :fighting:

thanks for the review. tbh i don't think i'd go out of my way anywhere in the UK for a good drive. i just feel that a "good drive" is likely to be ruined by weather, roadworks, slow moving traffic, bad drivers etc. i would definitely like to go on a driving holiday to Europe, maybe do a few laps of the 'Ring and some time on the Autobahn, but i don't think there's anywhere in the UK that would actually be worth the effort/petrol.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to be

I love the roads from Betws past the Devils kitchen, Tryfan, Glyders etc.  In the winter it gets a bit interesting up there though :driver:

Which roads are those? I am staying near Betws-y-Coed so may have driven some of them.

Think you've already mentioned it, it's on the way to Bethesda via the A5,

You can always drop over the start of the Pyg / Miners track of Snowdon, that's an interesting road at speed  :rolleye: loads of very tight turns and lots of concentration required.

Over course it's good to get out of the car round there too... I especially like the Tryfan, Glyders, Devils Kitchen walk, and Y Garn if your feeling fit. pic You can see the A5 in red on the map.

Would it be possible to come up with our own GTI triangle? Or maybe even a list of good driving roads?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

It's an amazingly technical bit of road once you know it enough to go fast, a real test of all aspects of a car's handling - but as for scenic, no.

I think it's entered into some kind of Stelvio/Transfagarasan/Col De Turini mythology, which it doesn't deserve. Good if you're in the area, not something I'd travel to especially.

If you've got a day, then do something like this...

A57 Snake Pass is a great road IMO. Much better than the EVO triangle. A82 from Inverness over Loch Ness is good too. :driver:
