RNS 510 Problem!! Advice Needed!!
« on: June 21, 2013, 08:39:13 pm »
Hi,

I own a VW Golf 2.0 TDI (2010 plate) & paid for my local VW dealer to fit an RNS 510 system 14 months ago. The system worked perfectly up until about 4 weeks ago, when it started to just randomly shut down.
One morning I had a flat battery on the car & after recharging it I realised that there was a problem with my Sat Nav (which I depend on!). When I input my destination & press start route guidance, the map comes up & the woman just says your destination is in the direction indicated, but tells me nothing more! It used to give me exact audio directions at every turn, junction, etc but it no longer does this! On the map my location is highlighted by a red circle & my destination is pin pointed by a flag, but like I said it no longer gives me "any" audio directions! Everything else on the system (eg. radio, CD player, etc, continued to work perfectly.
I took my car back to the VW dealer today and explained the problem with the sat nav only to be told that there must be a fault with the system as it is draining my battery, so they have disconnected it. They could not tell me however what the fault could be. I was told it could be a small fault such as the wiring, or could be a big fault, but in any case no one within VW could diagnose the fault because they did not have the diagnostic tools to do it! Further, I was told that they could not tell me who manufactured the system, or where I could take it to be looked at and potentially repaired. As far as they are concerned, they said my only option (as the system is out of warranty) was to replace the system with a new system at a cost of £2,200!!

Any help, or advice on what the problem could be, or where I could get it looked at would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jess

Shame you didn't check the GPS viewer and see how many satellites it was detecting before disconnecting it -  my first thought would be to reinstall new firmware but the man for the job is Eddie-NL so get your posts up to 10 and pm him it will surprise you the help and guidance available on this site.

If you brought it from VW you will have a 2 year warranty on parts.

Thanks DOYLEBROS, perhaps there is hope yet!
XJAY1337 - Unfortunately I did not purchase the system from VW. When I purchased my car I asked the VW dealer what would be the best built in sat nav system to put in my car. I was told the RNS 510. Luckily (I thought at the time) a friend of mine who is a mechanic sourced the system for me from a reputable brokers. I purchased it with a 12 months warranty & paid the VW dealership to fit it.
I fully appreciate that the system is not under warranty & am willing to pay for somebody to assess the extent of the fault.
What I find extremely frustrating is the fact that VW advertised the system as a VW system but yet apparently I am being told that nobody within VW can diagnose/ repair the system, or even point me in the right direction to someone who can. I was told that VW would never even attempt to repair the systems. If they developed a fault, however minor, whilst being under warranty, they simply replace the unit with a new one, outside the warranty, your only option is to purchase a whole new system.
Now, If somebody looked at the system and said it was totally knackered I would accept that, but I begrudge having to purcahase a whole new system if the fault is relatively minor, and capable of being repaired quite easily.
I telephoned Sextons (car audio specialists) after leaving VW, and they said that they did not have the diagnostic tools to diagnose the fault, and that the only people who would have the proper tools would be VW, or the company who manufactured the system for VW. However, had I bought a Kenwood, or other kind of system they had all the tools to diagnose, repair etc.
Feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place right now, beginning to think I should have purchased a Kenwood system! At least I would have had the peace of mind of easy after sales repairs post warranty, should the need arise. Something I stupidly took for granted with VW!
