Gearbox issues ?
« on: June 28, 2013, 08:40:35 pm »
Evening folks,

I'm starting to get a weird issue with my gearbox, 2nd gear in particular.

It doesn't feel as "punchy" as before, doesn't feel like clutch slip more like just not putting the power down.

It's a '04 Golf 2.0 TDI , the 16v BKD engine, with 101k on the clock, it's also mapped ( stage 1 ) with a full tbe.

Any suggestions ? Is it a new gearbox ? Is it something simple, can gearboxes be serviced on particular gears ?

Thanks folks ;)
JD

Oh bugger ! This is what I was afraid of...any idea of the cost of rebuilding or getting a new box ?

In the last year is had a lot of additions, ICE, TBE etc, don't really want to sell up !

Well first off, run it till it blows; a recon box, yours as a trade in should be around a monkey.

Iv always took previous cars straight to a friendly mechanic as soon as I spot a problem saves ALOT of money usually the syncros but if left I'd have chewed a few gears in my Renault Clio r27 anyway, I started getting a crunch in 3rd and 4th and was back on the road for a few hundred quid

I'm steering away from eBay boxes myself mate as you get little comeback. Mine drives fine, no power loss and it engages into gear fine albeit makes horrendous noises but the drive isn't affected, I bypass fifth as that is worse affected and drive the car as normal, I'm very aware it will go soon, this could however be, today, tomorrow, a month, a year, 5 years....

When it does finally give up the ghost I'm going for a recon box, parting with mine in exhance... looking about £400 for the box and then labour, so £600 - £700 at my local garage.

Hope this helps  :happy2:

One of the guys who works with my local mechanic lives across the road from me :P

I asked him today about what it could be, he seems to think its the "2nd gear synchro starting to wear" which means naff all to me but does make some sense.

Would this sound about right ? He's under the impression that a gearbox specialist could basically service it and replace the worn parts and he also reckons I should stay away from ebay boxes as these can be more risky than anything else.

Price it up... as how far behind are the other gears?  My preference is a recon box with worn/knackered box in exchange.

First is nice and "punchy", 3rd fine, 4th fine, 5 and 6 fine.  They seem to reckon if they get the box out and get the specialist to have a look they will be able to tell what's worn, and what's near worn etc for the princely sum of about £150 which doesn't sound too bad in my mind
