Golf GT TDI 140 cutting out

Hi, new to the forum so please be gentle with me.

Last week we bought a 57 plate Golf GT TDI 140 with 50k miles on the clock.

Got it for a good price as it need a bit of tlc on the body side of it but it seemed good mechanically and low millage which was what we was after.

But then we had a problem, after driving 40 miles back home from buying it the car cut out 200yds from home at a junction, no warning or signs just died.
Pushed it to side of the road then came home and got on phone to seller who said he'd never had any issue with the car!
Gt the iPad out and then started googling and came across a few forums including this one with others saying they had similar problems but all seemed slightly different and all fixed differently.

Managed to get car started after cranking it over for nearly 1 min, fired up and drove it up to VW who plugged it in and no faults showed up on vagcom.
Frustrating as was hoping it would show up something to help diagnose it but no.

I changed fuel filter and file lines in and out of the filter housing as they were showing signs of perishing and maybe drawing air in.

Drove it around this week and it has cut out twice since at traffic lights. There is no warning, no hesitation or missing of the engine just cuts out.
Then if I cranking it over for a while it fires up.
To me it it like the fuel has stopped and engine cuts out, then while cranking over it is bleeding fuel back into the system and engine and fires up?

Next on my list would be to replace the lift pump in the tank.

I am only trying these things as they seem to have been mentioned by others in a few post I found on line and they aren't that expensive parts to buy and try.

Suppose what I am asking for here is if anyone else had the same or similar problems or could point me in the right direction of other things to try or replace.

With getting the car at a good price that means we can afford to spend a bit of money on it to get fixed and still have a mice reliable car

Surprised I've not had any replies or suggestions.

Took battery out to gain access to the glow plug relay underneath the fuse box, and now I have the power steering and traction on troll lights in the dash.

I read somewhere but can't find it that its because removing the battery has lost the basic settings for the power steering and abs.

In regard to resetting your ABS lights - take full lock to one side, hold for a second, take full lock the opposite side, hold for a second, then centralise it. Drive slowly in a straight line for about 30 yards+ and the lights should go out. Otherwise a short drive will suffice.

About your fault, I'm really stuck as I never had an issue with my TDI like this. Early on it had to have a new ECU as it would not start, but never cut out when driving, it may need a bit of poking and prodding from a good independent garage.
Never heard of this before, but check operation of your intake flap motor (sits before EGR), if that is closing when it shouldn't then it will be starving the intake of air, a very long shot really.

Is it just the engine cutting out, or is there an electrical blackout too?
Does it judder and chug while shutting down?
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Hi, thanks for the reply, I will try lock to lock after my cuppa and oh here lol

As for it cutting out that's all it does, it's as if you'd just turned the key off, no warning, juddering etc just cuts out.

I think all the lights on the dash show as normal including the glow plug light, will have to look properly next time it happens.

I'm planning on stripping and cleaning egr and manifold if needed so will check out the flap too.

I know it's a pain when there is no obvious broken or faulty part or code showing up.

A bit of trial and error should hopefully work out in the end

Just tried what you suggested, lock to lock on the drive then drove up the road and within 20yds the power steering and abs lights went off.

Thanks for the help saved a trip to VW who I'm sure would of charged me for doing it

Good stuff, just remember this for everytime you have the battery disconnected  :happy2:

You may also have to manually 'wind' down each electric window all the way, then back up, for the one touch to work.

Hopefully an expert will be along to aid your more serious issue soon.

The window switch is faulty anyway a common issue I believe.

Would be good to find someone localish with VCDS to plug back in and clear any faults left and also turn on a few tricks that apparently can be done

I know what it's like when new people join the forum looking for answers to problems and once sorted never use or contribute to the forum again.

I've always joined forums to do with whatever car or interest I'm into, always found them helpful and meeting new people etc

It's a common fault with the lift pump being blocked up with oil sent back to the tank from the tandem pump on the engine that can leak a tiny amount of oil into the fuel return lines.

If you go for a used one try looking at a few at the breakers as some are dirtier than others and a clean one will be better as its not had as much oil around it.

Yea that it similar to what I have read somewhere before.

Rang up TPS today to price up the relay I thought it might be and that was £60 plus vat.
Bloke on the phone asked why I was changing it so I explained what happens and what I was going to replace inc the lift pump and he said he'd doubt it was the relay, but maybe the fuel pump relay 449 under steering column.

I order one of these instead as it was only £8 plus vat.

I got a price for new genuine lift pump and that was about £160 plus vat.

Might be the next thing I buy

Why did you change your pump, did you have similar issues to mine?
