No not changed anything yet, ordered a fuel pump relay will pick it up tomorrow.

It's not been driven much as don't want it to cut out and be stranded but at same time need to drive it to see if it will cut out so I cam check a few things

Why have you had similar issues?

No nothing like the trouble you are having but did have my car eating turbos few years ago.Know how frustrating it is

Is that a common issue too?

I could go out and buy all these parts and hopefully sort it but it won't help me find out which one it was so will just change one part at a time and hope to get it sorted soon

turbos was only an issue on the first mk5 54-56plate

That's the sort of money I was quoted from TPS for a new lift pump.

I went for the £40 used option.

Why did you change your pump, did you have similar issues to mine?

I wouldn't say so... Mine just cut out on me and wouldn't start again, I read up about the fuel pump problem and tested the one fitted at the time and when supplied with 12volts it didn't run so I changed for a used one to see if it fixed it and it did the job! I will replace it for a genuine new pump when and if this one ever goes.

Did you replace the relay you mentioned?

No didn't pick it up today as I was out of town, will get it tmrw and try it.
Fuel pump is next but might bight the bullet and buy genuine just I case the secondhand one is a duff be too, no point buying it twice

Update.

The car hasn't been driven much as we've had a lot on so didn't want to get stranded anywhere.

Out in it tonight and it cut out again, literally 100yds from the first time it done it!

Engine was at temp, it had driven 20 mile round trip and it died as I turned into a road.

Checked dash and all the usual lights were on inc coil light.
Checked fuel pump relay under dash on drivers side, that was ok
Checked lift pump in tank, couldn't hear it as was on a noisy road so I took top off fuel filter housing and fuel came out when ignition turned on.
Did notice the fuel filter had slipped off the top and was in the bottom of the housing and there was little diesel in housing about half way up filter off the bottom?
Turned the key on and off to fill housing and put lid back on, didn't have no gloves to put filter back on lid.
Tried several times cranking engine over but fails to start.
It's rather hot out and don't want to keep turning it over so will wait till it cools down and try again.


So I have eliminated a few things and noticed the same thing again. The filter housing isn't full BUT the pump was working when I checked after cutting out.
Could the pump cut out at some point and engine runs until too low in filter housing the cuts out?

The mrs also noticed today that in 3rd there was a bit of a hesitation when accelerating, not all the time but occasionally .

Anybody care to give a bit of advice on what to check or try now, should I buy a new lift pump in tank in case it has an intermittent fault?

You need reliability (new bits = reliability) so the tank pump is the best bet since the filter housing should be full - it's the most common fault for your problem.

Could the cam or crank sensor be an issue, when hot it fails causing it to cut out?
Just something else I've read?

Agree on what you say about new parts, that's why I'd rather change one thing at a time to eliminate the faulty parts

Going to keep an eye on fuel filter level, see if it drops again when it cuts out

If you check with TPS they'll tell you how many pumps they've sold and it will be a lot more than cam or crank sensors for your model of vehicle - also the sensor faults will show on VCDS scan.

Any fix to this fault? i have a 2.0 tdi engine code BKD first time the engine cut out i had the car juddering before it cut out plugged in my snap on solus machine carried out fault scan and EGR Swirl flap fault appeared but was only a intermittent fault cleared that fault but vehicle still didnt start after. Removed EGR pipe to the valve and blocked the pipe using 50 pence but still no start. sprayed deodorant into the intake and the vehicle finally started after cranking for a while. As a mechanic myself i know that usually you only need an easy start if the vehicle is being starved of fuel but i have replaced the fuel pump in the tank no less than a month ago (with a Bosch pump from factors)  im starting to think could be fuel fillter as im unsure when was last replaced. I also no there is a bad turbo whistle which aslo sounds like there is a leak around exhaust manifold which could be drawing in more air causing this fault of cutting out? any help would be greatly appreciated
