Used cigarette lighter = smoked in car ?
« on: June 29, 2013, 03:13:11 pm »
Looking at a new car and it must be a non smoker. It's from a dealer. It doesn't smell smoky on the wheel or headlining and can't see any burns on seat or carpet. but the cigarette lighter has seen some use. Has anyone ever used their cigarette lighter and not smoked in the car ? Or am I just kidding myself and should move on (it's a rare spec). It's a 3 year old car.

if there's no smell of smoke, and no burns anywhere why does it matter?

I have used the car cigarette lighter in previous cars to light a barbeque (not easy) and handed to a friend (outside the car) to light a cig with. Have seen a fair few people smoking outside their cars in car-parks. No reason why they couldn't use the car lighter for that.
Not necessarily a given.

As RUSS_LEEDS says, if it is not showing any other signs does it matter? I think if it was smoked in you'd know.

If the car ticks 99% of the boxes, buy it.  :happy2:

This.
Even if it smelled of smoke you could have it cleaned inside-carpets, seats, etc.

Thanks, lighting a BBQ, I would not have thought of that. I've bought a car before that didn't smell of smoke to start with but as the air freshener/fabreeze wore off it did and I really don't like smoke smell.  I never got it to go completely away.  The main reason is I have asthma and my small children will travel in the car. So even if I'm not noticing directly I still don't want smoke getting around in the car.  It's a dealer car that's been through auction so I can't gauge how much smell suppression might currently be in play.

You get special sprays that dissolve the bacteria in smoke for treating cars that have been smoked in.

Maybe this car has been done. I've heard this stuff really works along with a thorough clean.
