with al the money spent on saving money on the wheels, it might be worthwhile finding out different tyre weights(of similar spec and perfomance tyres). which is heaviest of the top tyre brands.
I agree that it is worth doing the research. I found out that while I had more grip, I hadn't made a huge leap in weight savings.
My 17" 'race' wheels are light, but the tyres (Toyo Proxes R888 225/45) bring the total weight up to near what the stock wheels are.
I believe (and could be very wrong) that this is because of the steel belts running around the sidewalls - makes them stiff but heavy.
If i'd gone for a lightweight 18" wheel, the R888 would have been lighter as they don't bother putting the belt around the sidewall.
So it would have been a lighter overall package, but (as you get what you pay for) there's also an exponential increase in the cost!
I'll be trying out some Hankooks for my next R spec tyre (through a work contact) so will find out more about them first.
I'm not enormously fussed though - my race wheels go on about 6 times/year and the grip benefit far outweighs keeping the standard weight.
