Cambelt
« on: July 18, 2013, 09:34:53 pm »
had a cambelt done in 2009 on my mk5 gti, was serviced at vw last week and they said it needs a new one? they claim it needs to be done every 4 years.. just want to know if this is true or not.. it does make a abnormally loud ticking/rattling noise when ticking over (and yes i know they sound like that) but mine is worse than normal

thanks

Yeap, every 4 years or every 60k miles, whichever comes first.

Find a local VAG specialised and you should be able to knock 25% of the price VW charge for a Cambelt and water pump change.

Would want to know more about the noise - there's other faults that could cause that issue as well as a slack belt and at what gauge temperature!

much appreciated

yeah dolylebros ive compared it to other GTi's and it does sound much much worse, even vw said it was one of the worse they've heard.
if you mean the engine temperate, that is never bang on 90degrees either, it floats between 80-85 then touches on 90 and goes back down

[/quote..........I bet then it's the ''small'' cam chain & tensioner (right hand side of engine as you look at it). My last 05 GTI had the same thing & replacing them stopped the horrible rattle. Not cheap tho mate, sorry.
