Newbie from Shropshire- Ed30

Hello all,

Just thought I'd introduce myself as everyone knows how useful these forums are! I came from a Mk5 R32 (and briefly an Audi Diesel) so I'm fairly familiar with the platform. Anyway here's the new motor:


So far I'm loving it it has a nice few extras including a highline dash, CD stacker and Xenons plus the lad that had it before had the front end clear wrapped so there is barely a stone chip in sight!

Great pic there - lovely looking car, but I would say that (due to my own Steel grey ED30).

Many plans for the car, or happy to enjoy as is? How do you like it compared to the R32?

Plans at the moment is minimal, the only thing I want to do is the boot pop mod that raises the tailgate with the key fob. Its taking all my will power not to remap it as theres so much potential with it but for one I don't want to compromise on its fuel efficiency as i managed 41mpg on a long motorway run which was better then my tdi (170) audi managed and my current situation would only allow me to get a remap OR a clutch and previous experience tells me the two tend to go hand in hand!

As far as comparing it to the R32 goes it obviously doesn't compare in the sound department but for general driving it seems just as quick as at the right revs the turbo kicks things off well whereas the R32 was more progressive. I think its also more fun to drive without the heavy v6 the 4mo, its a lot more agile than the r was. the other thing i miss from the r is the brakes! the ed30 is on tarrox discs and its going on redstuff pads tomorrow so I'm hoping that will improve them as they seem a little weedy!

 Get the map, your fuel economy will (If anything) probably improve and your clutch should be fine will a linear stage 1 map. Some slip on stage 1 but not all do. Stage 2 is were most peeps start to suffer but even then, not always.

As for those Eddy brakes, I'm afraid you won't improve them, their more than weedy, their sh*te. Ok (ish) on a standard GTI car but if you add any power a BBK is needed IMO.

Boot pop is very cool (when it works) And a cracking cheap mod. Usually in the cold weather, they all stop working until the next summer!

So on the remaps, obviously revo is usually the first port of call and they presumably would be able to do me a nice linear map are there any other good mappers? preferably in either essex or the midlands. Whats the general consensus on the bluefin? I like the option to turn it on and off but don't like the general-ness of it.

With the BBK is the best bet to get the 312mm (I think it's 312) kit from the r32 and s3? or are there other options?

Do you know if the boot pop's inability to work when cold completely locks the boot or can you still work it the old fashioned way?

The boot still pops opens (unlocks) when the fob is pressed but it might not open/swing up. It can still be opened via the handle though. The only bit that has a problem (sometimes) in the cold weather are the struts.

As for maps, look at REVO, APR and especially R Tech, id avoid bluefin. R Tech are a VAG tuner who do custom maps and specialise in the 2.0T FSI and really know their stuff. I have never read a bad review of their maps, plus they are half the price of the other 2.

The R32 brakes are a good upgrade but do weigh a bit. I don't know if they fit behind the standard Eddy Pescara's or not, may need spacers, may not. Other options are the NQSBBK, a porsche brembo kit, they won't fit without spacers of different wheels. also look at AP Racing or VWR Racing BBK's, all 4 pot.

NQSBBK Porsche Brembo's on my Eddy, behind my 18"x8" ET44 BBS VZ"s which are very similar (identical in design to the BBS Pescara's) to the Eddy wheels but wider and with a better offset so no spacers required...

The review of the Rtech map is one of the best reviews I've ever read! and sound perfect for my situation, one more question, is it worth doing to a stock ed30? as I really don't want to start throwing money at the car just yet but I wouldn't mind £300 ish for a map

^^^^ Yes, it's worth doing. Get a Stage 1 map and no other hardware is needed or required. They will give your car a health check first but update your Diverter Valve to the Revision G,  check your PCV and change the cam follower, all cheap to buy and do. Loads of threads on these, just use "search".

And IMHO run your car on the highest octane avalanche n your area, ideally 99RON.

Get the map, enjoy the car, then think about an intake (£400 ish), a decent sports cat Turbo Back Exhaust (£1.3k ish) and probably a clutch (£1k ish).

Welcome along, and glad you found my review a good read..
You won't regret RTechs TIV remap, as its no torque killer, means it will be kinder to your Clutch ;-)

Remap will transform your Edition 30, and you will so surprised that the car handles it with ease

How easy is it to do the boot mod and where do I start...can I have a bit of a dummies guide to getting it done?

If you go for the Boot Pop it will need coding via VCDS afterwards to allow the mod' to work.
