Golf Gti vs ed30
« on: August 15, 2013, 02:30:29 pm »
Hello I know a few of these things have been covered but..
I was in the market for a Gti but then everyone says get an ed30 but I don't really have that money.
I basically wanted to know what a golf mk5 Gti with a ko4 and relevant mapping is compared to a stage 2 ed30..

Would like to know things like :
How much for stage 1+2 on both cars and basically a step by step off each stage and how much it has cost ?

I'm sure this will be very helpful for a lot off people unless somebody has asked the exact same way I have ..

I was also wondering why everybody seems to prefer the dsg compared to manual..is it just because there quicker and smoother because I always though it would generally take the (driving factor) out off driving

Cheers

Get an edition 30. If you get a standard and then try to do all the mods and ko4 conversion it will cost a small fortune and you would have been better off saving a bit more and buying the ed 30 which already has the ko4.

Spot on! What this man says.  :happy2:

If your looking at getting a GTI with a K03 in it and then putting a K04 Turbo in it and all the associated mods and ancillaries to go Stage 2, why not just get an Eddy and go stage 1?, about the same BHP with no work involved and only £300-£600 for a map to lay out for.

Loads of threads on all of your questions, use the "Search" button or go to the  "Performance" section and have a look round.

For Maps, the main peeps around these parts to look at are REVO, APR and R Tech. All their websites will give you all the info on price and mods required/recommended for their various stages of tune.

Happy car hunting.

or get a Cupra?  Better brakes, the K04 TFSI engine and all for the same price as a GTI

The only thing is the ed30's are about £3k dearer like for like against a GTI of similar miles/condition

You can get a very nice low mile GTI well spec'd with xenons and all the toys then stage 2 it and its plenty for the road @275-280bhp and 300+ lb/ft

If u plan to go around 300+ bhp then Defo go edition 30

A KO4 upgrade isn't cheap and the stock edition 30 engine is stronger out the box than stock GTI.

As for gearbox it's up to each individual. I've owned tuned ed30 with DSG and stock manual GTI. Personably I prefer manual. More control IMO and more fun. DSG farts sound really cool
Tho & will take big power. If it go's wrong tho expect big bills

Worst that can happen with manual will be a new clutch/dmf

Did the Edition 30 ever come with the Recaro seats?

Or just the Tartan trim or Leather trim?

Was it even an option for the Edition 30?

Go Eddy. My GTI had the turbo go into retirement, the new turbo was awesome at stage1 (retch) but then the clutch needed upgrading. Was expensive  :sad1:

I would have gone K04 but your talking exhaust, FMIC, HPFP, injectors, new map, KO4, clutch... labour unless your brave. You would be looking at 320-350bhp then maybe a diff and uprated brakes... depends how far you want to go.

there is also the seat cupra option as stated earlier.

KO3 and KO4 are different power deliveries, depends what your after really.  :happy2:

I wish I had bought an ed30.

I've spent thousands, and being a baby k03, I'm maxed out at 265 bhp. I couldn't justify going to k04, what with the added cost of a clutch etc. If i'd started with a k04 base.......

are you kidding... i swapped my leather for the much nicer ed30 seats. so much better now in the cabin.

Id go for an ed30 if you want to looks of the ed30 which IMO is LOADS better than the look of the standard gti with its black plastic trims.

If you purely want power I'd just get a gti and do stage 2. the ko3 is a great little turbo and i love mine and for a 2wd car you will get all the power you want really.

£9500 is about as much as I would want to spend on either and for that you could get the GTI around 07 plate, 50k miles and less, highline cluster, armrest and MFSW. What could you get for £9500 in an edition 30? Spec wise and milage? Obviously would be private sale as dealers charge a canny bit more

I've just had my ko3 turned into a ko4 one.....and picking it up today. Small fortune yes, but the only reason for doing it this was, I was a white golf and liked it, and I want things now. A habit that will no doubt grow out of me as I grow old and wise!

Yeh, fair few £££ spent! And.....leaving standard clutch on for now as "should be ok".
