Why is every job so hard?
« on: August 19, 2013, 10:45:43 pm »
It seems to me that every small job I tackle on the Mk5 turns into a right pain!

Tonight I've fitted my Mk6 boot handle and to start with I struggled removing the plastic cover to expose the lock and wiper motor. Then I found I had to remove the wiper motor to remove the handle but gues what? I can't remove it as the wiper arm is seized!

I did get the new handle on after just moving the wiper motor out of the way but it wasn't easy! And then to top it off, the wire for the boot handle is too short as the mk6 one is one the other side! So now I have to extend the wires.

Anyway, rant over!

Any tips on removing the wiper arm would help.

Had the same problem with the arm on my mkiv - dousing the nut in WD40, and repeating over a few days made the second attempt work!

i had the same problem on the wiper motor, i had to cut the motor leg while it was on the car to do the reverse camera mod,

But to be honest the mk5 is kind of fun to work on compared to other vw's

I did give it a few squirts of GT85 as I was going along but it didn't help, I'll try WD40 tomorrow and give it a good soak and try again!

If that fails, I'll cut it off.

Are you just replacing the badge like for like i.e not installing a RVC? If that is the case you can remove the badge without taking the wiper arm off. To get at the screw that is obscured you will need to use the correct sized Torx bit, then use a spanner (7mm ish I think) to turn the Torx bit.

You only need to be able to crack it. You will be able to spin it out using the bit and your fingers. This is how I did it when trial fitting a badge. Hope this helps.

I got it all done in the end mate by moving the wiper motor out of the way enough to get my torx drver in there...

Just got to get the wiper arm off now to fit my bung when it comes.

Gasplus is better than WD40 for future reference
