DSG woes.................... now all better
« on: August 26, 2009, 05:54:40 pm »
Like a few on here my DSG gearbox has progressively been getting worse over the last few months.

The symptoms where :-

  • Lumpy changes in the lower gears (mainly from 1st to 2nd)
  • Lurching at low speed crawling
  • Issues with reverse initially not responding then taking off very quickly

These issues have all been caused by a faulty mechatronics unit (the gearbox ECU), according to my dealership this is becoming quiet common having replaced 6 others over the past month (across various VW cars not just Golfs).  :surprised:

After about a three week wait for the part mine was replaced today and I am very pleased to say it has fixed the problems and the car is now a smooth and responsive as it was to start with.

So a big thumbs up the Wayside Towcester for impeccable service on this :happy2:

This is one job that I am very very glad was still under warranty as the part alone is in the region of £1100  :scared: plus the ECU lives inside the DSG box so requires an oil change as part of the job. Mine took around 5 hours work all in including the test drive.

So if your a DSG owner and get any of the symptoms above get them checked out before your warranty runs out as this will be progressively worse and isn't a cheap fix.

Can a symptom of this be:

Stick it into drive and take foot off brake before it bites. Car then lurches forward on acceleration.

?

If so, mine is doing it, so might get it booked in.

It feels like you have awful clutch control like if you were getting used to a biting point on a clutch for one symptom Deako.

When pulling away it felt like the car had kangaroo petrol in it. I think the worst case was reversing up a gradual incline but since it was changed the car feels brand new.

Yeah, I had it on my A3 diseasel and so know what to expect if it happened again (hope it doesn't!!).

Another, more extreme symptom was one which the A3 suffered from...sudden stall after setting off - not good as it happened twice setting off from junctions, once onto a roundabout and several times at traffic lights, all in the space of two weeks. This was on top of the kangaroo juice effect and uncontrollable initial surges in reverse and setting off :fighting:

I eventually took it back to Audi after the roundabout incident and demanded it was fixed as the next time it could have been fatal!.....They gave me a 3.2ltr A3 and fixed it. Liked the A3, but it drank petrol for England
Golf R gone.

My DSG is playing up as well, its a nightmare getting it in the garage sometimes after a spirited drive or warm days.
But i am to scared to take it to the dealers.

all this does not sound like fair wear and tear...these issues are most likely down to component failure somewhere in the module.  So, its a quality/ reliability issue as a result of a bad batch of components or a design flaw....

frustrating that the customer is expect to fork out thousands of pounds for VW's screw up.
