Keys stolen!
« on: September 03, 2013, 09:31:40 pm »
Hey guys

I won't give you the full story but basically I've had one of my car keys stolen and my car was broken in to at home last night.

No damage- just look like a bomb had gone off as they ransacked every compartment in the car.

If it wasn't for the big iron gates I can guarantee the car would have been stolen.- so I'm assuming they will be waiting for another opportunity.

Anywayyyyyyy. What's the best port of call next? New locks, keys and barell? The car is currently garaged with a steering lock and I've removed the battery.

Help :(

Sorry to hear that squire. I presume you've informed the police. Would you need to notify your insurance company or anything? Keeping it parked in the garage without a battery is a good idea until you work out what you're going to do next.

Thieving scum should be  :fighting: at close range.

Get the keys and anything they can affect changed.

Your insurance company may help but that is a gamble if you go that route.

Add a cheap CCTV system in case it gives any additional clues to the faceless scum which sneak round doing as they please... :fighting:

(Sorry for rant - had a similar thing with my old mkiv...)

If they have a key then there is a possibility that they can and will have another attempt at theft. Not necessarily at your home but when parked at the shops or pub or wherever. Change the locks. Your insurance company may pay for it, I paid a bit extra to have that covered. But you are 'at risk' so they wont be happy if you don't.
And fit a good alarm as suggested.
Really sorry to hear that it happened though. B******ds.

My friend had this happen and they actually took his car. Police recovered it a few days later COMPLETELY unmarked... not even a curb mark.. AND they had put half a tank of fuel in it!!! Very odd..

Anyway as the insurance claim hadn't been processed he decided not to involve them (ie ruin his NCB) and did it on his own.

IIRC all locks and immobiliser coding etc was about £700-£800 at his local VW dealer.

Had something similar happen to us once.

We didn't let the car out of our sight for a few hours while sorting other things out and then moved it somewhere safe (friend's garage) while we sorted things with the insurance companies.

With hindsight, I probably wouldn't have bothered with using the insurance. The car locks weren't covered on the house insurance, so we called Churchill (our car insurer) who sorted it all out for us - BUT - the total cost was sub £500, so by the time we'd paid an excess it wasn't worth the subsequent rise in premium year on year for having a claim.

if you know any one with vagcom they might be able to un-program that key so that it cuts out the immobiliser... that will stop them driving off with it... Its worth a try!!!

I know on my a3 the number of keys registered to the car is in the menu. I think you can have them unregistered so they won't work
