My Dad's just been looking to change his car again and was looking at a couple of new Volvo's both top of the range R-Designs, a V40 and a V60 and one of the things he pointed out was that the tax was either £30, £20 or £0 and they were all on paper capable of doing an average mpg of over 60 or more and this got me thinking.
Where are the government going to get their money from in the years to come? Surely at some point these cars with little or no tax that do 60,70, 80mpg are going to have to be taxed in some way? or in 10yrs time will we just be paying £3-4 a litre for fuel to balance this out?
Give it 5-10yrs and the 2nd hand market is going to be flooded with cars doing high mpg and with very low tax costs (even the performance versions) so will the last generation of "fuel guzzlers" like the hot hatches, 4x4's etc of the last 7-8 years be worthless?, given that cars nowadays are built to last a hell of a long time there'll surely be some bargains kicking about soon?
