Replacing battery
« on: September 23, 2013, 09:30:56 am »
Looks like my battery has died, so I need to replace it. Is there anything I need to do to avoid getting any warning lights after replacing the battery? Also I now need the radio code for my car, is there anyway I can get this without VW charging me for it?

If it is already coded you should be ok without needing one.

You will get dash ligts, but should be the usual full turn left & full turn right when stationery, roll forward straight for about 50ft then the lights go out.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Thanks for the reply! I had to jump start it to get it going and it is now prompting for radio code...

Looks like I will need to provide VW with the radio serial number. Is there anyway I can get the serial number of the radio without removing it?

VCDS scan or do you have an old log of a scan?

Unfortunately not, my local dealer seems to think they have to take the radio out to get the serial number and they want to charge me £15 for it! I may as well do it myself but I would rather they get the serial number without having to tak the radio out!

I rang around a few dealers and one is happy to provide me the radio code free of charge but I need to provide them with serial number first, the other dealers want to charge me for providing the radio code!

It is a 5 minute job to remove the stereo if you have a torx screwdriver

Can someone let me know in terms of amps etc what I should be looking out for? I picked up a battery from my local VW dealer for around £70 but another dealer quoted me around £130 so want to make sure I put in the right type! Its for a MK5 Golf GTI.

Thanks

Current battery details:
VARTA
12v 72Ah 380A DIN
640A EN/SAE

New battery details:
Part number: JZW 915 105

Yep, get a battery with a higher or at least the same rating as currently. Don't keep the one provided!

I replaced mine last weekend. £53 inc VAT for an Exide Excell from TPS. 3 year warranty and it's a slightly better spec than the Varta that is standard fit. 71ah I think it was.

I have the MFD2 in my car and had no coding problems after changing the battery.

Thanks for the replies! So the important bit to check with them is the Ah part? e.g. 72Ah, the higher the better? Do the other letters/numbers need to be checked?

Im glad I didnt fit the battery now! :pomppomp:
