If you actually try getting someone's registration information from the DVLA though you can't just request it willy nilly.
You need a valid reason.

https://www.gov.uk/request-information-from-dvla

While I'm sure you can get information I've never heard of someone post up online to say they have done.

I know, bit It's easy to get round Jay. The reasons aren't checked and it's the fee they seem more interested in! Very much like what happens with the V5s.

I'm willing to give it a try with your golf if you want :p

But you already know where I live after you spent last night...    :booty:

I'm just saying that one members car gets stolen, it's sad but very unlikely was it targeted because it was spotted on a forum and probably was spotted and followed home one night.
Plus Edition 30s are always being looked for they are a very sought after car by the criminal underworld very sadly.  :surprised: especially in white.

People who spend £20k+ modding their cars with £5k rotiform forged 3 piece splits and a £3000 set of seats with a £2000 retrim, £10k of engine work etc, these are the kind of people most at risk and yet comparatively have no misfortune.

Ultimately what I'm saying is people are getting close to mass hysteria, don't post up where you're from, don't post up photos of your cars numberplate, etc.
Where really what happens in 99% of cases is that some pikey spots your car and follows you home. And in the 1% that do find your car from a web forum they wouldn't NEED your location, they would find you. Just like Neo from the Matrix.

If they can't find the keys they aren't getting anything.

What's that got to do with anything?

Ultimately, if someone wants to steal your car they will. And in almost all the situations, cars are stolen to order, people find a car in their local area, follow it home one night and then break in and steal the keys.
However if they can't find the keys then they're not going to get anywhere.

Vehicle theft has almost nothing to do with posting photos of the car online. Same with cloning numberplates. Someone would just spot a car on the street and take note of the reg and either nick the plate or get one made up from Ebay for 50p.  People are under some illusion that there's a secret society of theifs trolling their build thread when in reality the only people checking their threads are people like you and I!

If you want to blank out the numberplate of your car when you post a photo, and not involve yourself in discussion by saying what town you live in, that's absolutely your choice. But as I said, it won't reduce the risk.

The ONLY reason I can see for blanking out numberplates is for insurance purposes (as in you don't want insurance companies to see your car on a forum, that you've declared standard but actually has 500bhp and air ride...)

I think you have misunderstood my original post.

1. Firstly I was just trying say that this info is not that difficult to get hold of and just for people to be careful.
2. I haven't accessed any such information myself i was just highlighting that in a previous job the info could be accessed if you were that way inclined.

Of course there are all sorts of reasons this could have happened. Like I said just wanting to help out with advice from my experiences.

I really do hope that you do get It back and that the scum who took it get caught!

I hvae to say i was going to post similar to what Jay has said. The thieves will be coming on here but not to help them steal the cars, it is to sell all the parts back to you guys.
You dont need to look on the internet to find cars to pinch. All they need to do is sit in the town centres with a Greggs pasty wait for a GTI to come past and follow the owner back home, if it looks to suss for them to steel go back to the town centre grab a steak slice and start the process again.

Sorry to hear this mate, I'm not too far from Bo'ness and  have seen this car on the road a few times in the Falkirk area. Will keep an eye out, for what it's worth!
