New boy looking for first ever car!
« on: October 13, 2013, 11:59:30 am »
Hi all,
I'm turning 17 in a month and have been looking on this forum for quite some time now  :happy2:
I'm looking for a mk v around the £3k mark as insurance at my age is extortionate, and can only go to up to the 1.6 FSI model.
As I'm new to buying any kind of car, and as I've always wanted a mk v, I was looking for any advice you guys could give when buying my first.
I'm looking to mod quite a bit (professionally done, I don't want to be looking like a boy racer  ), hopefully changing to gti front end and r32 back, skirts and any little mods you guys can think of to make my first car look mint!
Any advice greatly appreciated :happy2:

My advice would be to seek out how much your insurance is going to increase when you add your planned modifications, then see whether you can afford it; before buying the car. :happy2:

I had an '03 1.2 polo for my first car... Cost £3k to insure.. Cost £2.4k to buy... (3.5 years ago)
Good luck with it.. But I really think that kind of car+modifications will cost you a pretty penny to insure

Been to look at a few already, so it seems in good hopes with my parents helping out pay. Insurance seems to mix inbetween the 2.6-2.8k mark, it's beyond me how they charge nearly as much as the car. Is ere any things I should be looking out for when buying a golf? How many miles it too many miles for a 1.6 fsi? They all seem to be over 100k.

I've always loved the look of this shape! I'm more than happy with the very basic one they made, i like to think of it as a 'blank canvas'

Wicked motor mate!

The way I would go with that, if insurance allows, is not to do the Mk5 GTI hexagon grills look, but go more modern with the slated grills of the Mk6, Golf R etc. can get some nice parts for the Mk5:

^^^^ Bagged is a term for the car having Air Ride suspension.
