Buy now-Autotrader
« on: October 13, 2013, 12:44:43 pm »
Got my car advertised on Autotrader site and just received a text with a code and telling me to go on their site if im interested in selling at the price they offered me. Is this a scam of some sort or a genuine possible sale? Not sure if anyone on here has ever dealt with them or not but would be good if someone has.

Thanks.

Wait for the off shore worker who wants your paypal address to pay and his friend will pick the car up in a few weeks

You reply to what looks like a genuine inquiry (not the normal Dear Myster, I want your item for a birthday gift for my son who is on a top secret mission in the North Sea - cut and paste from an actual email) and the potential buyer says they have looked at many cars and ask if the URL they send you is your car advert. The link takes you to a very convincing webpage which looks like autotrader account login page but it's an attempt to harvest your login details.

Haha i've had plenty of these also. First one i didn't know until he sent the next message about him "being at sea and he wants the car for his daughters birthday next week" haha. Must think i'm daft falling for that one. Then few days later got exactly the same email from a different email.. Its a joke when you can't sell a genuine car to a genuine person rather than these fake buyers that are out to ruin people..  :fighting:

Funny I am selling my mk5 at the moment on Autotrader and had the same text message.

They offered a really healthy price and said will pay in cash.

After some research online apparently when you take them up on the offer they arrange for a rep to visit you and buy your car in cash, but because they don't want their rep coming all that way to see you and risk you not being at home they take a £50 deposit which they return when they meet you.... after you pay that £50 you will never see them again  :fighting:
