A used ECU can be used, but there is a few things that are needed. search on ross tech for more information as the relevant coding and adaptation values have to be transferred from the OLD (ORIGINAL) ECU to the NEW (USED) ECU.

Well that might be a bit of the problem as the old(original) ecu is not responding for the can bus k line..but i have sourced ecu with immo code..and got access to dealers diagnostic vas at mates garage..and know someone who could code it...if worst it can be virginized at ecu repair centres...if accessible via can bus

^^Was just going to suggest try BBA Reman.

My last Golf had the same issue in 2008 and I regret buying new from the dealer as the old one could have been repaired.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Hey thanks guys for help, I've tried Ecu testing and their answer was that the ecu was beyond repairable as it wasnt talking via the bench harness to their computer, no can bus signal. Got the immo code of the cluster but for the coding procedure is the old ecu pin needed. So I left the both ecus with garage as the guy has an friend in Glasgow who can try to bench solder the old immo3 chip into new motherboard, absolute nightmare. So waiting for the outcome. Even getting rid of the immo would be better than 1200£ from vw...

For some reason nobody wants to touch med9.1 ecu's! I had exactly the same issue earlier this year. I ended up buying a second hand ecu and highline clocks off eBay for £400 and fitted them myself :-) Went from mid to highline so ended up a nice mod but can't stop modding since then lol
