Bushes, WALK & Coilover combos?

The amount of people on here who have had multiple sets of coilovers because they bought cheap the first time.  But nice or buy twice.

Any one who puts a £180 coilovers on an expensive high quality hot hatch isn't someone id take advice from!

Then don't take my advice.

As I said mate I have driven on many kinds of suspension and let me tell you they are "good" - Very good for the price, almost a Bargain, and as mentioned come with a 2 year warranty. Visually as new they are almost identical to the AP. As you might have noticed I am not one to hang about (not so much in my GTI but in my old TDI that was a little race car and it was treated as such)

I have not found a SINGLE PERSON in 3 years who have put JOMs on a Mk5 and said "they're crap". Can you link to any of these people you speak of?

I hear the occasional drop link failure, of which I documented -http://uk-mkivs.net/topic/55809-public-service-announcement-jom-coilovers-knocking-not-terminal/page-7#entry1878978 -  so I do not recommend running these with uprated ARBs, however for a decent honest coilover there's no issues with them and certainly do not deserve the snob factor that some people give!

I'm running the Ohlins Road and Track coilovers on my Ed30. Certainly there's no snob factor for me.
I had gone from 'standard' to a Bilstein B12 set up and just felt the Bilstein suspension was way too hard for my old bones.
So after much research into suspension sets up and how different products work. I ended up looking at Ohlins stuff.

This is their budget product at the very bottom of their range. But due to their dual flow valving the dampers react superbly in both bump and rebound. This makes them very road friendly. Which is what I was after.
Of course spending a whole heap of cash on Ohlins gear is not for everyone and I've got no experience of other more cost effective coilovers. But gotta say the Ohlins are superb and well worth every penny. My best mod.
Especially given I cannot see me getting rid of the car for quite a while.

These combined with Cupra lower arms, Supapro ball joints, Eibach antirollbars, Walk and both Unibrace XB and UB have given me a fine handling but very compliant car.

Alex AKS fitted the Ohlins and enjoyed setting them up. So he knows what they are like first hand.

Been out in a car with them on already, prefer the ride on KW tbh Alex! But I appreciate you have alot more experience than me. But I will never forget the time when back when you were working at the TT Shop you said "KW make the best coilovers"  But that was back in 2006

Haha. They used to be. Loved them on the old ibiza compared to the bilsteins I had on for a month or so. On the mk5 platform it's definitely the other way around. Used to have kw 's, now have the B16 bilsteins. Far superior and even with them on stiff they still absorb the bumps.

Just had to have some clubsports rebuilt as they blew the front seals.  Cost 450 quid to rebuild the pair. Needed new pistons too. Not great for a year old set.

Yeah I know of a lad with a set of H&Rs that snapped. Swings and Roundabouts with cars/parts of all makes and brands I guess.  I do love your knowledge though, you've learnt a hell of a lot from when I first met you, and you've done well, I will no doubt be asking for your advice soon when I get "stuck in" to mine

Its all relative.  What one person deems acceptable another might think is extreme.  I personally would prefer to keep ride comfort as near to or better than stock and instead concentrate on ARBs/mounts/bushes.  The ASTs on the Golf R were actually comfier to use as a road setup than my Stock Fabia vRS suspension lol!!

YOu have two options for springs.  Either Linear or Progressive.  the APR Golf has the  progressive springs wheich are kinder for road work.  The linear springs will handle better for track work, however will not be as kind on the road.

I prefer the Progressive ones, whereas SteveP for instance thought they were to soft for his car so had the linear springs fitted iirc, albeit his track car lol.

Having previously had KW V3's, AP Coilovers and H&R Springs on stock dampers on my old Mk5/Mk6 GTI's and can 100% say the AST's beat these all hands down in the build quality, adjustably and out and out handling improvements these bring to the car.

Wow! Overwhelmed by the response and advice from you guys, got so much to go on but almost too much choice now!haha Think it's going to be my budget that decides tbh, is there a significant difference between the ride on monotubes vs twintubes? I understand how both work but is there a benefit of one over the other in ride or even with how theyre manufactured etc?

Monotubes don't aerate over a series of bumps. So they don't get stiffer and stiffer the more they work before they can recover.  Most H&R twintube dampers are made by Koni. The monotube dampers use bilstein components.

The Bilstein B14 kit is stiffer then the H&R monotubes.  So that's a factor if you want comfort.
