Heres one of the pipe infront of the radiator, where I've circled is the end that goes under the intake manifold.

This pic is looking under the intake manifold. On the very top left of the pic you can see the now metal pipe coming in from above. Circled, is the end of said pipe, it has a flange on the end of it, held in place by 2 torx screws. One you can see, the others rough position is marked with the X. If I undo this, is this where the regulator is housed?

That hose you're looking at goes to the main thermostat housing mounted on the block I think.

I think I can see the bypass thermostat in the second picture you have posted. I think you can see the metal clip that holds it together in the top left of the picture.

The shiney stainless looking clip?

Ah, right. We're getting warmer. I'll have another look tomorrow, lol.

Ok, think I found it. The silver bit on the left is the bottom of the rubber pipe that is in front of the radiator.

Sound. I'll go and see VW tomorrow for a new part. Can it be changed without loosing all the coolant and just top it up after? Or is a drain required?

I'm still wondering what this bit is though? The part in the very first pic I posted. I've enlarged it a bit so it's easier to see. Its the black plastic bit under the a/c metal pipe. It looks the same as the black plastic housing that holds the regulator in the pic above. It's making me think there may be another regulator there too. It's right down the side of the inner arch beneath the alternator pulley.

Not sure, I'll have to take a look at mine tomorrow in the light.

It's a full drain job to change the one we've identified correctly - sorry.

Ah well, I suppose the trade off is that the regulator looks fairly easy to get to.
