Had a bit of a bump today - help needed with part numbers etc.
« on: September 22, 2009, 07:05:45 pm »
I'm never going to knock people with parking sensors again as I could have done with them today :sad1: (I still think they look gay and will never spec them on a car though!).

I reversed into a tree stump that was out of sight in my rear view mirror and now have a broken bumper and dented backbox :fighting:

Do I need an entire new bumper? Or just the valance (the bit under the part the number plate is attached to) or just the inset bit in the middle (the bit that's black on a normal GTI).

If anybody could post up pics off ETKA of the parts it would be appreciated, plus anywhere I could get one cheaper than VW? I'll give VW a call tomorrow for a price.  I've noticed Awesome GTI sell them (click) but is there anywhere else?

Any advice on the backbox appreciated too - it's only dented, there's no holes/cracks so would it be ok to leave? Are VW likely to say anything when I hand it back on my PCP plan? They have to expect a reasonable amount of wear & tear/scratches/scuffs etc. but what do they class as reasonable?

If anyone has a candy white bumper in mint condition, let me know :happy2:

Here's the damage:

lower bumper 1K6 807 521 L this number is for the Pirelli but I presume they are the same,  not cheap at nearly £400.  The exhaust bock box is 1K6 253 609 BG again not cheap just over £300 you'll prob need the exhaust clip cos if its never been changed it may need cutting 1K0 253 141 D

Sorry to here your bad news by the way hope ya get it sorted easy enough.

Sorry to hear about the damage. As RR will testify to the first JKM meetup, I reversed into a bollard that I hadn't noticed. Thankfully, the car bounced off it and there was no damage to the bumper. Less lucky for you.

I'd imagine the "wear and tear" would refer to stone chips and the odd kerbed rim rather than "damage" which is what your car has. A relative managed to damage the side skirt of her VW (scraped it on something) and she had the car on PCP, handed it back and never heard a word about it.

are we allowed to tie stealthwolf to a stake?
You can try all you want. All I'm doing is observing that last year around this time of year, there was a noticeable increase in the number of people having problems with their cars, and that this year the same thing seems to be occurring.

If there's a curse or jinx, I certainly didn't start it!

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Hmmmm, never really thought of it like that.  Might be an excuse to get a Milltek  but I'll still have to find on original exhaust to put on when I hand the car back.

Cheers Mat :drinking:, never mind!

Thanks Darren.  Which bit of the bumper is the part number for? Just the inset bit or the whole lot below the number plate? Can't tell properly how many bits the bumper comes in.

i would doubt anyone noticing that exhaust like that!

Im sure theres loads of lumps and bumps on the sump covers of most cars, it doesnt stop it working, its just been used.

see the exhaust like that! ;)

now the bumper, i think youd have to replace that.

have a look on ebay, speak to some breakers

Looking at that bumper I'd say any bodyshop should be able to repair it.  I wouldn't worry about the exhaust.  Just cosmetic ?

But wouldn't you be able to tell that it's been broken in the past?  I've never had experience of bodyshops so I don't know how good their work is?

Well I rang two VW dealers today - both different branches of the same company.

The first one was rude on the phone.  When I told him what part I wanted he said that there were so many different parts it could be he needed the chassis number (I didn't realise there were so many different bumpers for the Edition 30?!). After I told him I didn't have it to hand but he could have the registration number he told me that he couldn't proceed without the chassis number.  So I kept him on the phone whilst I got my V5 out, gave him the chassis number and he came up with a price of 371.05 inc. VAT plus an estimate of £180 for spraying.

The second dealer was quite happy with just a registration number , but gave me a price of 40 something pounds.  On questioning this he said it was the black piece of the bumper.  I told him that it was colour coded and he disputed this saying that the chassis number I'd given him showed it was black.  I told him (again) that it wasn't this part I needed but the entire lower half and he came up with £288.25 plus VAT (£331.49) but couldn't give me any idea on the price for spraying, and made no attempt to find out.

Trying other routes now to see if I can get it any cheaper, but will probably go back to the cheaper dealer, then go direct to the bodyshop.

Interesting how the prices vary though considering they are the same company?
