Replacement/spare key
« on: January 12, 2014, 06:35:58 pm »
Just got a new Mk5 GTI - really nice car, though it has come with only one key (1ko 959 753 G). Am I right in thinking that the remote can be recoded, but not the immobiliser? - could I just buy a used key, a key blank and an ID48 transponder? Or is it not worth the hassle and should I just buy a circa £40 complete new (copy) key?

Cheers

New or second hand, makes little difference really other than you're getting the immobiliser chip you need with a new key whereas you'll have to buy it seperately with a second hand key. It'll still need coding to your car by someone with the correct gear or the main dealers. The remote part is a fairly simple procedure with a working key and a series of button presses, but the immo side is more complicated.

Ok, cheers. Was just wanting to make sure that the only bit of the 'internals' that had to be new to enable programming was the transponder chip.

Yep, just the transponder chip, but as said you'll need to have it coded to your car by someone, which is the tricky bit. I'd find someone willing and able to do it first before you buy it as the main dealers probably won't code a key they didn't supply.
