Mk5 brake discs
« on: January 25, 2014, 09:27:02 am »
Morning, I was in at VW yesterday getting the car a new set of front discs and pads, pleasantly surprised by the price to. It have a 2005 GTI. When I got home, I weighed a new disc coz I thought they were awfully heavy. 8.5kg each! Genuine part, but 8.5kg seems very heavy for one disc? Did they give me the right part?

Measure them. Should be 312mm diameter.

Brake discs are heavy items

I paid £70.10 per disc.

I will measure them shorty, I just thought 8.5kg was excessive. Imagine skimming about 3kg off each, the car would be way quicker!

They need to be heavy to absorb heat to prevent brake fade. Skimming them down to reduce weight would reduce brake efficiency when you need it.
Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.
