Is the TSI engine really that bad?
« on: February 13, 2014, 07:29:23 pm »
So I'm thinking of selling my TDI and buying a Petrol as I literally don't even cover 100 miles a week in it now.  I still want to keep a Jetta as I absolutely love the car but there isn't much choice.  The 2.0 TFSI are quite rare and there's only a couple on eBay at the moment (http://goo.gl/MddLmO and http://goo.gl/YsPb6I).  The 1st one is perfect except the price and the 2nd one has slightly higher miles and hardly no description which has put me off.

There are quite a few of the TSI engined Jettas on there though and I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me the common faults, pros and cons etc with them as all I've really heard are negative things.

Mk7 tsi is belt driven!

Iv just gotta mk6 1.4 tsi and it was bit sluggish and after I gave it a full service it runs like a dream and goes so well for a 1.4 and puts a smile on my face! Keep it well maintained and serviced and it will serve you well. Steer away from the early tsi cars as they are more likely to have the timing chain related issues.

Overall great engine for its size and costs and you got good economy too :)

whats your take on the 1.4 tsi rich?

If its the twin charged one then they tend to end up with major running problems. Hence they stopped making them

Hope that helps a little

Personally i wouldnt touch a tsi! I work for a vw dealer and were always doing 1.4tsi chains being done and the waterpumps/supercharger clutch. And were at least doing two or three 2.0tsi engines a month where the chain tensioners are failing and causing valves to hit pistons! They go well and sound good but id always be waiting for something to happen!

Hmm.. out of interest when should the water pump be changed as these engines are chain drive which is meant to allegedly last life of the car....NOT!

Mine is a 60 plate 1.4 tsi 122 turbo only with 51k miles and no chain or waterpump changed thus far and running well.

Are you talking about the 2.0 tsi in the MK6 Golf GTI, being flakey ?   :scared:

Hi Marckc, yea it is! its a cracking engine dont get mme wrong but this is a common problem! Aslong as youve got decent vw main dealer history you should get a decent goodwill gesture! Even better if youve got an extended warranty!

Blimey, I'm shocked. Thought about buying a MK6 last year, didn't in the end as I couldn't find a 5 door with the right spec.

I was going to look at one tomorrow. Googled the issue and it looks quite common these days, put me right off  :scared:
