Help buying a used Mk5 GTI
« on: February 14, 2014, 03:09:04 pm »
Hello everyone, first post on here. I've had quite a few VAG cars over the years and am currently in the market for a Mk5 GTI.  I've been looking on and off for a couple of months but am looking to bite the bullet and buy one within the next few days.

Originally I was after a DSG but was getting a bit concerned about the number of owners who haven't bothered doing the 40k oil change. Very nearly bought this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171231721868) but if you look closely there is something not quite right about how the tailgate lines up.

So, currently thinking Manual is a safer bet. I've got my eye this car as its a nice spec and only one owner from new (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201401130995710) but I've got a couple of concerns. Firstly the cambelt has never been done, is this a big problem? I've been researching a bit and the intervals specified seem to vary. Would obviously get it done ASAP if I did buy. Secondly the service history is a bit ad-hoc, its only got a couple of stamps in the book but does have a folder full of invoices from VW and everything bar the belt change has more or less been done to schedule(ish). How much does all this affect the value?

Would appreciate any input/ general buying advice. Thanks  :happy2:

Welcome to the forum  :drinking:
I'm sure others will be here soon to give you some more detailed advice. However I can tell you that the cambelt should have definitely been done by now. In fact at that age and mileage it should be coming up to its second cambelt change soon! You could use this as a bargaining tool, because if you buy this then you should get one fitted immediately! It can cost nearly £400 for the work.
On a different note, I have never seen a GTI with a beige interior before. Not to my taste, I just didn't know they existed!

Yeah the cambelt worries me a bit, didn't seem to be making any funny noises but wouldn't want it to snap on the way home or something. The beige interior seems quite nice although seems to show wear easier than the black leather and fabric versions. Also I noticed the sliding ashtray cover on the armrest was jammed shut. Is this a common problem at all?

Not something I've ever heard about or experienced, but someone on here might correct me. Maybe a simple fix though.

Few possible alternatives I've found on eBay but it seems all of them have some sort of compromise. I want something that I can keep for a few months to a year with minimum hassle

High mileage manual - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2006-VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-GTI-BLUE-3-DOOR-XENONS-HEATED-SEATS-REAR-PARKING-/121274268494

Nice DSG but maybe a little bit old for me - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Golf-GTI-mk5-mkv-/181313010644

Much newer but high miles and manual - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251448104298

Hmm, decisions decisions!

There are plenty about that have been well loooked after , never buy a performance car that has been poorly maintained . Not replacing the cambelt shows a lack of knowledge about the car too , it should have been done at 4 years old and needs doing agian at 8 years old .
Check the quality of the tyres too , that shows whether they cut corners or not too , cheap tyres , cheapskate owner  :innocent:

Budget is about what all those I've linked to are advertised for, but if I need to have work done to the car immediately then its coming out of the same money pot. I think the one in my original post has been reasonably well looked after as it comes with a load of paperwork including the purchase invoice from new and it had a big service last year. Tyres are ok but alloys majorly scuffed and in need of refurb. Interior needs a valet. Cambelt is the main worry. Also wondering if it might need a new clutch at some point soon due to the mileage? Drives fine though.

U can usually get a good idea if the car has been well maintained within 5 mins of looking and driving it; scuff marks, scratches, poor conditioned alloys/tyres, lack of maintenace paperwork, damaged/missing items exterior/interior etc etc. I always get a HPI on it even from a dealer :-).
As for the cambelt, make sure its been replaced by VW dealer or respected VAG specialist backed up with receipts if the car is 4-5 yrs old regardless of mileage. If cambelt not done after 6yrs+ walk away! even if they say its been done but no proof, purely because its pretty certain the rest of the important servicing has been neglected. Paperwork tells the story of the car and how well its been looked after.
Yearly dealer/specialist servicing is a very good sign, however be aware some cars have the "long life" servicing with service stamps every 2 yrs, this is not what i personally like to see on a car myself, but if car is tidy then weigh up the pros and cons of this.
I myself steer away from modded cars or cars that have different oem specs like beige interiors , research what is oem spec and list what expensive extras that are on it such as winter packs/ leather etc. High milers well maintained and clean are not necessarily the worst options as this could be motorway mileage and less wear and tear on clutch/brakes/engine, my car was ex-lease and has been no trouble at all for past 3yrs+.
Enjoy ur search and patience is a virtue  :happy2:

The Beige leather was an option on the GTI , I like it and would have specced it from new if I could have afforded a brand new Mk5!

Thanks for all the replies. I went with the 55-plate DSG GTI linked a few posts up in the end. Seemed to be the nicest of what's currently available in good condition with a full maintenance history. Closing this thread of for now, will post up another thread with some pictures when I get the chance  :drinking:
