Clear Coat Orange Peel
« on: February 15, 2014, 01:00:15 pm »
Hi,

Not really sure if this is detailing, seems to be more of a bodywork question, but you guys seem to always know the answers!

Basically I prepped, primed and painted a rear bumper. Spent a few days with coats of primer, wet sanding it back when dry, putting the colour on a few days later and it looked pretty good actually. However, putting the clear coat on left a really nasty orange peel effect. So much so that the bumper now looks almost like the textured plastic on the rear of the MK5!

Obviously a bit annoyed as it was going great up and till this point. I've only got 2000g wet & dry here, but gave it a go wet sanding a small patch back for about half an hour. Seems much smoother now, not much peel and when wet paint is colourful and shiny again.

Wanted to ask whether you think its worth wet sanding the whole thing back 1000/1500/2000/2500 then polishing or to start again from scratch? Thanks.

No you dont need and shouldn't wet sand back to 1000 Grit!!!
Start at 2500. It wont ever be perfect and you shouldnt aim to have it perfect or it'll look odd against the oem paint. Best bet id car pro orange peel pad on a da.

Depends what you've used to paint it and how.

Imo start with 2000 by hand then refine from there.
