Something becomes classic with age, therefore the mk6 cannot be a classic yet as it's not been around long enough and in sufficient numbers for the masses to form a solid opinion.

Was the mk5 deemed a classic after "x" months??

nah what im saying is, the mk5 is the first gti in a good while to really get some great feebback from media and consumers....the mk6 does not seem to have has had much of a wow factor to it......it has alot of the characteristics of what the mk5 had......?

just my own opinion......

I think the MK5 was branded 'the return of the real GTI' which is what gave it the wow factor...as nice as I think the MK5.5 MK6 is, it wont get as much attention because its so similar.

A few years down the line I think it will become more desirable purely because its the facelift newer car and wont differ in price a hell of alot to the late MK5 GTI's.

it won't be worth much, that's for sure
Forget about this "return to form" and "classic" baloney.

Part of its "return to form" will be its downfall, thing is, it was that bloody popular they sold boat loads of the things!! The right colour & spec is your only chance of making yours stick out from the other xxxx on the 'Trader in the years to come.

Pirellis are the one to have.

i've given up on finding a second pirelli (to replace roc) as prices are stupid, vw used prices are on par with what we paid new (as we got about 8% off list)  residuals are far better than the roc  :stupid:

Aye, they were panic money before Christmas too - you could have run a car for 12 months and still made a profit!!

There doesn't seem to be any grey import ones, like with the ED30 and I'm sure I've seen an estimate of less than 500 banded around. I'm sure someone can give a more accurate figure.

Store the wheels, more for preservation than because of their looks (I like them, but they're marmite) and with good spec, you've a good depreciation buster.

EDIT: Wigit beat me..

I know that because I bought my car in the middle of a recession, my car has actually gone up in value at the stealers.  It's false economy though because I took a massive hit on my A4 cab when I sold it.

having said that my finance agreement predicts that my car will be worth 7k in less than 3 years from now (from memory).  Thats still pretty good residual though compared to a lot of cars on todays market IMO.

I was surprised to get £18250 for my 18 month old Edition 30 DSG when I traded it in this week .... until I saw they would likely be putting it up for over £20K  :surprised:  I only paid @22500 for it new ....

I thought I was in line to get totally shafted as it was so new .... I know £4250 loss in 18 months is not exactly peanuts  but the last new car I sold after exactly a year (an S2000) managed to lose me £9K !!!
