If you're using an ipod touch/iphone Griffin do an excellent FM transmitter that you tune through an app you have on the phone/ipod and it has skip/play/pause buttons on the cigarette lighter which is useful.
i have one and its very clear, the app has a autotune feature which detects the cleanest frequency in your area. I think I got mine for about £25.

Thats the one I have, its pretty good, you get the odd patch when it gets a little fuzzy but not often (usually happens to me because I have to go over a massive hill to get to work) however after trying 2 different frequencies I found it works almost perfectly.

Yeah thats fair, I'll probably end up upgrading my head unit eventually as I want a built in sat nav, I just thought I'd share that as a cheaper alternative for you, I think theres a few people who have retrofitted ipod AUX inputs on here.

X2 for the connect2. Think I paid £40. IMO the sound quality is better than cd and you can whack it up fairly loud. I ran mine
Down the back of the heater controls and out so that it sits on top of the ashtray. Not very Oem I know but it stops you forgetting to remove your iPod so thieving types don't pop a window to get at it. I had to cable tie the plug to the box coz it kept falling out but have no other problem with this set up.

I originally had the rcd300 headunit wired with the connect2, but the connect2 ideally to be wired up to the 12V power outlet otherwise it will always be on and drain the battery, But then I changed my headunit to the rcd310 with aux enabled which in my opinion is a lot nicer and more modern, if the rcd310 is fitted to a pre 2008 vehicle you will need the canbus adapter to prevent battery drain, luckily I was ok and didn't need one as mine is a 57/08 plate golf I then bought the aux cable that wires in the harness in the back of the headunit and it works a treat, I'd be inclined to buy the rcd310 with aux headunit as it isn't that much and then purchase the aux cable I bought, Sorry for the long winded answer, just thought It might be something to consider as im glad I took the new headunit route.
