The big OIL debate
« on: October 06, 2009, 04:02:51 pm »

I am have used Mobil One 0w 40 since my 1st oil change at 10k and have had no issues what so ever. infact the engine ran quieter, rev'd quicker, and pulled harder.

I have just gone over 15k and time to do a new oil change.

I was at the stealer and they said they would put in Quantum 5w30 if i was to have a service with them and that 0w40 is no good...

Im sure that the Mobil One stuff is VW approved etc, but im ALSO sure that quantum 5w30 is not VW 502.00 or 505.00 certified. therefore you should go with Mobil1 0w40 at a minimum to meet VW oil specifications.

any way, what oil do you guys run?

and as its coming up to winter should i start looking at a different type of oil ?

Quantum 5w30 is VAG approved (505 Long Life IIRC).

That is the normal oil you will get at most dealers.

FTW I would use Castrol Edge  :happy2:

Castrol Edge should only be used on cars with over 10,000 miles as its a fully synthethic oil.

Quantum oil is VAG manufactured/owned iirc.

It the VW507 standard (aka Long Life Service Oil) you want to make sure you are using, which is 5W-30  :happy2:

iirc the quatum stuff is semi synthetic.

TBH the whole oil issue always leads to confusion as every dealer seems to say something slightly different. I did make a thread about it on scn, gonna search it up and post some of the relevant info.

if your car has over 10,000 miles and needs oil get a full synthetic 5w-30 oil, such as castrol edge which is specially formulated for VAG FSi engines.

Heres the quantum gold stuff the garages use.

Loads of people use the castrol edge on scn, so go for it, your engine is bedded in now so should be all ok.
