I am have used Mobil One 0w 40 since my 1st oil change at 10k and have had no issues what so ever. infact the engine ran quieter, rev'd quicker, and pulled harder.

Eeek - Mobil 1, of all flavours are grossly over-rated, and there are far better lubes out there.

Secondly, the 0W40 spec will NOT be 'FSI' approved - so there is a much greater risk of coking up your inlet valves.

I was at the stealer and they said they would put in Quantum 5w30 if i was to have a service with them and that 0w40 is no good...

The stealer is correct with the 5w30 recommendation over the 0w40, but there are better oils than Quantum too! 

Im sure that the Mobil One stuff is VW approved etc, but im ALSO sure that quantum 5w30 is not VW 502.00

502.00 is an old skool standard, and actually covers semi-synthetic brews too.  But more importantly, why do you want an old skool 502.00 spec, instead of the much newer, much higher specification, and much more suitable specs such as the 503.00 or the latest 504.00?

or 505.00 certified.

Huh - do you have a diesel?  Because 505.00 is an aincient and obsolete DIESEL oil spec?

therefore you should go with Mobil1 0w40 at a minimum to meet VW oil specifications.

Sorry, but Mobil 1 0w40 does NOT meet the current oil standards for FSI engines - because it does NOT meet the far more stringent 504.00 spec!

I would ONLY use a 504.00 spec oil, from only European oil companies, such as Castrol (who are owned by BP, and so will also include all other BP 'brands' including Aral), Fuchs, Motul, and some Total brews - which use Group 5 base-stocks.

I would categorically NOT recommend any oil from a US/North American manufacturer - simply becaues they all breach EU regulatiuons on the technical classification of what a 'synthetic' oil base-stock is.  They all use a far inferior Group 3 base-stock, which the yanks have allowed to be called a 'synthetic', but is actually just a glorified mineral oil !!!!!!

I can NOT recommend any Shell brew, because they refuse to disclose what base-stocks they use.

and as its coming up to winter should i start looking at a different type of oil ?

Anless you are planning a trip north of the arctic circle, then the 504.00 should be perfectly fine all year round!

Quantum 5w30 is VAG approved (505 Long Life IIRC).

That is the normal oil you will get at most dealers.

Huh?  The Quantum 5w30 may state on the bottle that it is VAG approved - but ONLY Volkswagen AG can grant that approval, and the last time I checked, it was NOT on their lists.

And I trust the '505 Long Life' was a typo?  Because 505 is NOT a LL spec, and it is actually a diesel spec!

Agreed with the Castrol Edge though - providing it is the correct version, because there are about three or four different brews of Castrol Edge!

Huh?  Whilst the Castrol Edge is fully synthetic - there is categorically not specified or limited to any mileage constraints!

Wrong on a few issues!

Firstly, Quantum oils are NOT 'VAG manufactured'.  They are actually manufacturerd BY Castrol, FOR Volkswagen Group United Kingdom Limited.  And whilst they may APPEAR to be the same as their Castrol branded counterparts found on the shelves of Halfrauds, they are NOT identical - they are a slightly inferior, slightly lesser quality than the pukka Castrol products.

Secondly, Quantum is NOT 'VAG owned'.  Quantum is simply a brand created and owned by Volkswagen Group UK - and has NOTHING to do with Volkswagen AG.  The ONLY 'genuine' Volkswagen oils are the ones which state 'Volkswagen Original Teile' on the bottle/can (and these are made by a variety of top-line oil manufacturers - with engine oils being made by either Fuchs or Castrol.

It the VW507 standard (aka Long Life Service Oil) you want to make sure you are using, which is 5W-30 

Your heart is in the right place Steve - but 507.00 is the spec for diesel engines, for petrols, it is 504.00!

how strange because all VAG cars come out of the factory filed with longlife oil which is fully synthetics as far as I know

Which 'Quantum' stuff is semi?  Their 5w30 LongLife3 is defo fully synthetic, as is their Quantum Platinum (but Platinum is not LL3 approved).

TBH the whole oil issue always leads to confusion as every dealer seems to say something slightly different. I did make a thread about it on scn, gonna search it up and post some of the relevant info.

That is because most of the peeps at stealers are thick unqualified monkies who cant actually read.  Volkswagen Germany gave out some increadibly specific, yet increadibly simple advice around this time last year - which basically stated that the ONLY oil they could use in their own franchised workshops, irrespective of weather the car was on T&D or LL servicing - was that ONLY LL3 oils were to be used.  This became fully effective from 1st December 2008 - so this info should have long been passed on to the minions in the stealers!

quantum silver is semi synthetic, quantum gold is fully, gold is the longlife

Not true - because their new Platinum comes in a silver can - but that is defo fully synth!

Loads of people use the castrol edge on scn, so go for it, your engine is bedded in now so should be all ok.

Quantum Synta Gold is categorically NOT suitable for FSI engines!  It is considerably inferior to the Quantum LongLife3, and is also vastly inferior to their LongLife2 and Synta ED brews.  Do NOT use that Synta Gold sh!t in your turbo FSI engines!
