Failed coilpack

So after a spirited 14mile motorway run yesterday afternoon, I got the engine management light flashing and a drop in performance. Engine started to judder so I pulled over, and saw a little white smoke coming from the bonnet!
Quickly opened the bonnet and removed engine cover etc to reveal this, accompanied by a lovely electrical burning smell.
Was just glad it didn't catch on fire!








The coilpack has jumped up out of the block slightly.

Left it to cool for a few hours while seeing friends, and ended up getting recovered by low loader late last night. Due to the time of day I just wanted to get home.
The engineer tried to start the car but it's not having it. 
I've not tried to remove the coilpack. It won't push back down either.

My next plan is to get it moved to a garage for further inspection.

Any ideas of what causes this, and what is the potential outcome?
Clearly at least a new coilpack, but what further damage could have been done?
Engineer mentioned possible issue with the connecting loom, or maybe a spiked ecu :/

For background, the car is an 05 gti dsg, 110k full service history, completely standard.

Any help, advice or experience in this would be gratefully received!

There was a recall for coilpacks - did you have this done?

Yeah recall on the coils had been done previously
(not in my ownership, but was up to date according to vw)
I've had the car for 18months.

Same thing happened to my car in november last year.  

I replaced them all with R8 coilpack which were about 70-80 quid.

Find out when they were changed by the dealer as they carry a 2 year warranty on all vw parts.

No... once i changed the packs it was fine

Sorry to hijack, When did the recall date end and they sort the problem with faulty coil packs?

I managed to remove the failed coilpack, and replaced with a new one.
The car still won't start though. It turns over but won't start.
I've tried the new coil in different cyclinders but still no joy.

I haven't been able to get it scanned (I'm in Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire area if anyone is nearby? Looking at the vcds register on here I think the nearest people are in Northampton or Hemel).

My insurance breakdown won't move it without me paying an extortionate fee as I've already had recovery home for this issue.

Any ideas/help/suggestions etc?

With that type of failure I would be checking the harness incase it's damaged then looking to see if it's a blown fuse in the engine compartment 20 A yellow - F40

I've checked the loom and connectors for all 4 coils, and it looks ok.
I've also checked both fuse boxes - all seem to be intact and in place, but will double check that fuse once it's light tomorrow.

Check the earth connection on the cylinder head

Do these have an icm?

When you check the engine bay fuses also check the lower usable links on the same fuse box!

It's always the furthest-left coil pack that goes first.. water runs down from the washer jet assembly, into the area of said coil pack.

I had an 08 GTI and after being told that the coil pack recall didn't affect my model, I still ended up replacing 3 of them in the two years I owned the car. Same symptoms each time.. occasional misfire under load which gradually got worse, followed by Engine light.
