How many years before you need to change a tyre due to age rather than wear ?

I don't think there is a need other than what condition/wear dictate. There is a block of 4 digits moulded on each tyre which gives the week # within a year that tyre was manufactured ie 0213 = week 2 of 2013.

Depends on how they are stored. If in good condition,temperature and not subtect to light,heat etc, they can last anything upto 5 years plus?
If on a car, a lot of it dependson condition, cracking of the casings where the petrochemical element is drying out etc, but strictly speaking a shelf life of 5 years.

I know tyres are date stamped ,so if 4 years is there shelf life, why don't they make you change them for the mot, after that time has elapsed, regardless of condition?

only advised on the mot if they are cracking or illegal but because they are on a car the rubber isn't  deteriorating
