ED30 issues. Help needed for a friend
« on: March 19, 2014, 05:06:44 pm »
A friend of mine who's actually joined here has bought a candy white ED30, he mentioned to me that it feels as if it's misfiring on idle so today we had a look at it with VCDS, first of all was a scan which revealed the following engine codes:

3 Faults Found:
000768 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
               P0300 - 002 -  - Intermittent

                    Absolute Pres.: 1010.0 mbar
                    Voltage: 14.224 V

000771 - Cylinder 3
               P0303 - 002 - Misfire Detected - Intermittent
             Freeze Frame:
                    Fault Status: 00100010

                    Load: 17.6 %
                    Speed: 0.0 km/h

000537 - Maximum Engine Speed Exceeded: Engine Warranty VOID!
               P0219 - 001 - -) - Intermittent
             Freeze Frame:
                    Fault Status: 00100001
                    Fault Priority: 0
                    Fault Frequency: 6

                    Voltage: 13.716 V

Now the first 2 are the misfire he's been feeling, did some logging and it does reveal a misfire on cylinder 3 only at idle? (fine when driving hard)  I've told him to have a go at swapping the coils between 2 & 3 tonight and we'll have another look tomorrow. But apart from the coil or plug I've read this can be down to a dodgy injector, is this quite common?

The engine must have been over revved to cause the other one, but hopefully no long term damaged.

The other thing is the car pulled 265bhp 280lb/ft on a rolling road so may indicate a mild map so I logged the fuel, boost and MAF. The fuel is spot on requesting 109.99bar the MAF indicated a reading of 260-270bhp with the 0.8 rule.

But the boost looks like this??
The blue is requested and the red actual

Here's the fueling:

Now to me I don't understand why the requested boost would do that, I know certainly on mine the requested stays up till the red line, or is this how they are mapped standard??

Help appreciated

My ED30 Misfires a bit on idle, but not enough to throw a fault code. My K03 GTI did the same.

I did some research on this and other forums and it is normally down to dirty valves which is common on TFSI engines. K04 engined cars are also susceptible to injectors failing, although you would be getting misfires all over the rev range if that was the case.

The over-rev code is worrying though  :scared:

The misfire gets quite high, after leaving it for about 1 min it was upto 30 on the log. Dirty valves could be the one! Manual clean may be needed.

The over revved code hopefully wasn't as bad as it sounds, you'd of expected it to of broke something. Maybe it has!

Exactly the fault I had. You have a failing injector. If you have this graham, you need to give the car to AKS,or JKM.

Mine suffered no missfires under load, but would missfire an average of 50-60 times a minute left on idle.

Your over rev warning sounds like your DSG gearbox has been remapped.

That's what we were hopping it wasn't going to be! Who's graham?? Lol

It's a manual mate not DSG. I think someone's missed a gear at some point to give that code

^^ think Steve was meaning me

I only get some soft misfires on idle (only 15 a minute maybe), it's perfect under load and when driving normally :happy2:

I'll do some logging to see if it's just one cylinder

Is it when it's misfiring under load that the injector is screwed?

No mine was screwed, fine under load, but would have lots of soft misfires on idle.

The scan shows it has been over-revved six times - so more than just a missed gear.  :stupid:

Looks like the remap also raised the rev-limit.  Or maybe he changed down to early . . .

EDIT:  looking again at that code - it shows driver error - x2.  Not only did they try to change down the box too early, they were also thrashing the bollox of it before it had even reached normal operating temperatures.  :jumping: :fighting:

Plan on getting a new engine soon, if they continue to abuse it - otherwise, use the foot brakes to slow down, rather than engine braking!  :stupid:

Finally, why have the logged dates been changed to year 2000?  :sad1:

I didn't think the frequency meant it ha been done 6 times I've had all sorts of number in the frequency? If it had happened 6 times it would show all the instances where it has happened. Same as the reset counter seems to always be 255.
80c is warm enough for me lol

As for the dates I don't know why they show this, on my car they are correct but on this and a friends they are silly numbers some show year 2034. I thought this was a fault with 1 car but have seen it a few times noe
