How good can these things handle?

Guys

I am pretty new to this. I've had a Mk4 R32 and now had an Ed30 for a year, had it mapped back in August and it's pretty darn good.

However, I do get a fair amount of wheelspin off the line, and sometimes in corners.

What I want to know, is should I should I invest some cash in the Ed30 or cut my losses and spend the c£7k I have on top to fund a tasty M3 or Cayman etc?

Just wondered how well you seasoned modders have these things handling. I would like to do around 5 track days a year and only do 5000miles a year as I don't use the car much during the week.


Just after your thoughts really. Any alternatives to an M3 you can think of?

The Eddy is a more than capable alternative to a M3 and a well modded one will happily deal with one.

Some bits and bobs to look at to help get alleviate wheel hop are engine mounts, anti lift kit and a decent 4 wheel alignment set up.

A diff would help put the power down better, along with the anti-lift kit, etc mentioned by MC71.

I was amazed the change in useful power delivery a diff gave my old TT/S3 powered mkiv - it went from useless in the wet, to just digging in & getting on with it. This was on a basic '00 1.8t, with no electronic TC, etc...
Didn't have long enough to play with it, as a BMW wrote it off 3 weeks later.

Don't buy a BMW, they're Golf killers!!   :signLOL:

Going to take a lot of money to make any FWD hatch compete with an M car or the Cayman.

As above plus ARBs, anti-lift kit and Uprated lowering springs.

Around £2-2.5k fitted and the ED30 will be transformed. If you are flush then Bilstein B16 PSS10's, poly bushing, tyrolsport dead set kit, Superpro lower front arm kit and a big brake kit would be the way to finish it off.

That lot would spend your £7k easily.

Thanks for the replies guys.

This is the dilemma, £7k creates a massive spec Edition 30. However, capital in the Edition 30 + £7k gets a nice M3 or Cayman. My issue is what to do basically, and at the moment I haven't got a clue.

Edition 30 is stealthy, cheap to run (compared to M Cars or Porsche), and economical really. I am probably more likely to track it over a pristine M3 and think that Caymans maybe have a slightly weak image/ I'm not sure I like the styling hugely.

Anyone had an e46 M3 and moved to a GTi?

Really?  I find it hard to believe it would "deal" with a 420 hp 400 nm rear wheel drive M3.  It might keep up in a straight line but on the track (where the OP says he wants to use it) I can't see it.

Ha! Rubbish Bridgestones, going to get some Michelin PSS on it in the next couple of weeks, so I'll see how I go on those.

Would probably be an e46 M3, not the V8 as much as I would like one.

Would love to of seen that! A de limited e90 M3 will do close to 200mph :driver: what's the top end of a stage 2+ eddy?
