Replacing Brake Discs/Pads on Front/Rear
« on: April 06, 2014, 12:00:53 pm »
Anyone done this on their own car as mine need replacing and thinking of doing it myself. Have watched some videos and looks straight forward but obviously with it being a major safety feature on the car I do not want to get it wrong.

Anyone with a good guide or video links would be great  :happy2:

I bought the OEM parts from VW and phoned my local independent.

He is only charging £70 to fit discs and pads all round, seems to be the going rate locally.

Saves me the hassle and provides assurance that the job is done well.

Just an idea  :happy2:

Do agree it would be easier and as I had issues with my car when first got I negotiated the Garage will fit them and not charge labour which will cost me £80/90 quid in total which sounds pretty cheap.

But looking at thing I would enjoy doing on my car which is not too difficult and may save me a bit of money if do it correct especially with the brakes.

How much did your OEM parts cost as my alternative is source the parts myself and then get discount on the labour from this garage

There will be tonnes of threads on various forums, just make sure you have enough tools to finish the job should you DIY.

You will need a caliper windback tool for the rears, but this will last you years.
Access to crack the rear caliper bolts can be a pig if you don't have the height sometimes, but defo worth giving it a go.
Even doing the fronts yourself sill save you money and inspire confidence.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

here is my guide on R32oc

http://www.r32oc.com/topic/35696-fitting-brake-discs-and-pads/

you'll need multi splined bits

a rear caliper wind in tool

and the worst part of the whole thing is cracking the rear carrier bolts as you need to remove the carriers to get the discs off.

if you don't have any of above i'd farm it out to someone.
Loads of extra's and retro fits.

Yeah one mistake I have made before is not having the correct tools but now with this car I am making sure I have the right tools as can make a job much more difficult.

I have to date done small things like Badge replacements, de-badging, stereo install, oil filter and custom air intake system but wanted to try something like this as can save money and would give me a good buzz knowing I did it myself as long as the brakes work when I press the pedal  :driver:

Personally, I'd do the pads and discs myself, now having done a whole brake conversion. You don't actually need to take the calipers off the car, just undo the carrier slider pins enough to get the pad out. The discs can then be taken off.

As said, get all the tools, watch as many videos and read as many guides and take your time. No mechanic was born knowing how to do anything, they all had to learn at some point.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Would you need the spline bits if your only doing the pads?

shouldn't do no, but a lot of people don't realise the front brakes have 2 allen headed screws you can remove behind some rubber caps, they just remove the whole piston/caliper at the front, which can be easier, but thinking about it these might be big torx and spline bit is only needed for rear.

but to answer your question no to either spline or torx, a set of allen keys 7mm included a 15mm spanner and a 13mm spanner and a caliper rewind tool for the rear is all you need for pads
Loads of extra's and retro fits.

Just looking around at some Brake Discs to purchase and have seen some makes like pagid, mintex, comline etc. Does anyone know if these are any good as do not want to go cheap but do not want to break the bank either as car only uses for work travel and nothing major.

Also in terms of the size it seems the Front Discs are around 280mm standard looking at most of the ones on offer but does anyone know what the rear ones are and seen a few at 255mm

Sorry to open up an old thread but does anyone know what torque setting is for the allen key bolts behind the front calipers as I'm changing my pads today. Cheers
