If you keep to good service intervals (at most every 10k) , and importantly, clean out the sump properly when refitting, it should be fine for years and years to go.

Does the sump get cleaned during a service or must you specifically ask for this and pick up pipe to be cleaned?

Hopefully for the OP it turns out to be a simple fix

Thx  :happy2:

I seriously doubt that VW do this at routine service

Think you have to Ask for it to be done. At added cost, think pick up pipe was £30ish
Tho i fitted it myself!

No... you only clean the sump out if you were to drop the sump to replace the pick up pipe.

VW probably wouldn't do this. It's not a hard job so do it yoruself and save the cash.

Not part of a service. Read the link bud. You have to jack the car and remove the sump to remove the pick up. It's not worth cleaning as it's one bolt to remove and cheap to buy a new one from VW. If your going to the trouble of removing the sump put a new part on. I did mine in a few hours.

Thought you were asking about sump cleaning. The only way to clean a sump is to remove it from the bottom of the engine. Scrub it with a soft wire brush and brake cleaner to remove the years of carbon engrained in to the cast and also the his that will be sat in the bottom of the engine that will not come out during an oil change.

What causes this to build up like this? For it to block the pick up pipe is a bit of a poor show. Maybe extended service intervals contribute??....thinking aloud now

Gone but not forgotten :-)

Had this problem on my Mk4 Anni. I changed the part in question and it didnt fix the problem. Turned out to be the oil pump. Hope the others are right. Cost me £500 to fix

I should hopefully find out the full extent at some point today. I have forwarded the thread onto one of the mechanics where my car is. Thanks for your input guys, I will let you all know the outcome. Fingers crossed.  :sad1:

UPDATE!

As everybody suggested the pick up valve was rammed full of sh*t.  They cleaned out the sump, replaced the pickup. Oil and filter change and she is like new again. The oil level sensor had to be replaced as well. So happy the engine survived, its been on my mind all day as i have only had the car three months.. Picking her up after work. Cant wait to get back in my golf.  :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :drinking: :drinking:

Thanks for your help fellas.
