Rns510 problem not your usual
« on: April 17, 2014, 07:28:06 pm »
So I've had the rns510 in my edition for over a year now and it has old software on it. However it always worked with the nav just in the mornings it was stuck in Budapest until it picked up satellites. Now it's stick there permanently, also when I put in my sd card it doesn't load anymore and also the cd drive never played nor does. Do I just need latest software if so where to buy it from??

Hi mate

What version is your unit as this will depend on what version of firmware you update to.
I have 4120 on my C version.

As for your Nav could be your gps antenna.

Not sure how you can update if your CD drive don't work? Have you tried a reboot?

DVD drive and card reader not working could be either the drives fecked, ribbon/power cables broken or disconnected, or perhaps the boards gone. I doubt it's going to be a firmware issue really, sounds more like hardware faults. Failing to pick up satellites could also be related.

If you start the unit up and press the "Navigation" button, then touch "Current position" on the touch screen it should tell you how many satellites the unit can see, and also how many it's locked onto. So currently mine says "Satellites 4/10" meaning it can see 10 satellites and has locked onto 4 of them.

I've done a reset and I'll check after breakie however it's strange with the nav as if I punch in a destination it will work on voice control and my highline display and even when I press for the smaller screen  but yet the large normal screen is still stuck in Budapest. I'll pull it out in a bit as at work we have nav faults on where the antenna is stuck so I'll check it as it's been like this since I've had it. As for the reader the cd just spits back out and says error and the HDR sees the card but when a cards in it says loading but in media never highlights the sdcard button so I can play directly from it.

When you pull the unit out, look on the label on the top and it should give you the model revision of the unit. Something like 1T0 035 680 C, and the letter at the end is the important bit. That will give you an idea of what firmware you can upgrade to. Also, if you have the developer menu activated (press and hold "Setup" until it cycles through to the third window of options) you can see what firmware you already have on there. It will also give you a part number such as above, but if you've had a firmware upgrade in the past this will probably be incorrect so ignore that and only use the label for the part number. If you don't have the developer menu activated you can do this with VCDS.

If you're close to North Yorks I can help you out with this if you want to stop round.

I do have the developer menu and that is actually my part number you have quoted it also states sw version 2760 so I don't know if it's the latest or not for my unit?

You can update to 4120 fairly safely. There's some scary stuff can happen if you fail at doing a firmware update, but there's also a SWL fix cd available on the net which can repair some faults with existing firmware. I'd be tempted to run that first before trying an update, see if you can get the unit back to full functionality.

Having said that, you're kinda stuck that the dvd drive doesn't seem to work, although it might work with a data disc such as I've mentioned. Worth trying before you get too involved with trying to repair it. If it's the main board that's gone then the whole thing is pretty much scrap I'm afraid, although there'll be some value as spares.

Also, what does your unit say about finding and locking on to satellites?

Well, it's seeing satellites and locking on to them, so it's a good start. Nothing much wrong with the gps antenna in your case I don't think. Must be something to do with the maps or the processing of the data.

Unfortunately, I think you're going to have to get the dvd drive working to go any further yourself with this (unless the SWL recovery disc will somehow work). That'd be my next move, download the SWL disc and see if the unit will accept that.

At the top of this section there's a sticky thread which has links to many different firmware variations, and also to the SWL cd I referred to. Download the disc and burn it to cd, and then see if you can get the machine to load it up and fix the issues.

Edit: This is the location of the SWL fix data file. Link.
