Timing chain needing replaced
« on: April 24, 2014, 04:18:17 pm »
Just had my car back from a major service and DSG service.

Was given a list of a few bits of work needing done. One of them being the timing chain.

I asked for a quote for getting the work done and for having the timing chain done they also recommended getting the timing belt and water pump done at the same time. Anyway I was quoted 750 for work to be done.

The car had the timing belt kit and water pump changed at vw just over 20,000 miles ago. But don't think the timing chain was done.

If I get the chain done will it be worth getting all the work done again or would it be fine just doing the timing chain. Could do without paying this much after spending 320 for my services today.

What is the reason they are saying the chain needs replacing?

It is rattling. Engine sounds like a diesel when it's warm.

It's a 05 and it was 3 years ago the timing belt was done with the water pump. No record of the chain being done at all

Unless I've lost the plot but depending on the engine I thought you'd either have a timing belt/cam belt or a timing chain...not both?

Timing belt from crank to one cam shaft and a chain from that cam to the the other isn't it. I've never had a GTi so I only "know" that from things I've seen and read and hence could be wrong.

The TFSI engine, like many twin-cam engines, features a timing belt and a timing chain - the chain drives the second cam. This, however, is not identified as a serviceable (replaceable) item, and only seems to be a problem in the 05-06 models. My 2008 did not seem to have any problem with a rattling chain, however my friends' 2006 rattles like a b!tch when warm...

Is this not just the cam belt tensioner issue? Rattles like crazy until warm.  I've never heard of the chain needing to be replaced.  Ever.

It's the opposite, it's fine when it's cold then once warm it's noisy. The belt was done 20,000 miles ago as recommended.

I believe the chain isn't recommended in getting changed, but seems to be a problem on early models which I have.

I don't mind getting it done. Just not sure if it's necessary getting the belt and water pump done again.

Also anyone know how complicated a job it is? Not to do myself but My mrs neighbour is a mechanic who works from home.

Only thing is the garage that quoted me the work use genuine parts and comes with a 2 year warranty.
