I have a 2005 MK5 Golf GTI and think I'm in need of disc and pad change on the brakes as the rear discs have a lip in them and also there is a horrible squealing / whistling / squeaking sound at any speed under 35 - 40 MPH until i use the brakes it will intermittenly go but will appear more or less straight away.
The car is a daily and i do no more than 3 - 5k miles a year.
I don't do any track days as of yet so just after something that will perform well as fast road use.
I know there are many different styles of disc to choose from such as solid, vented, floating?, drilled, grooved, dimpled, J hook etc etc..
I do know there are advantages and disadvantages to all but what would be the best for me for fast road use and possibly one or two track days?
Also would like to hear and know more about which brand's as i've read the higher the carbon rate, the better the braking performance?
Pads wise I'm totally clueless but have read that the Ferodo DS2500 are pretty much the thing to go for but will obviously come at a much higher price than a standard set.. Is there any other pads that are recommended that give a better performance than standard besides the Ferodo DS2500 that i can have a look at?
Basically i've done some research but i still feel no further forward in what to choose and I'm after some opinions / alternatives / recommendations from people so i can do further research to find out more as its not something that just needs changing i want to also learn more about it for myself.
Recommendations as far as now are:
Standard discs / standard pads even though when people say standard i still don't know whether they mean Pagid / EBC / Etc?
Standard discs / Ferodo DS2500 pads which for now is at the top of my list purely because of the recommendations amongst the forum.
Brembo Max discs / no pad recommendations i have come across so far to pair with this choice of disc.
Like i say I'm wanting to learn more knowledge on brakes, discs, pads etc.. what is it to look for and what to steer away from etc so appreciate any help you guys can offer.
Im also going to look into changing the brake fluid and hoses and see what improvements can be made by these and also guides on how to change them. If anyone can also offer any guidance / help on this matter too that would be great.
Thanks,
Carl.
