What happens if I remove my cluster?
« on: May 05, 2014, 09:37:13 pm »
Hey all, planning on fitting a rear view cam later this week and when I run the cable to the head unit I wana run it behind the cluster. If I remove the cluster will I get any faults or any problems that I will need vcds when I reinstall it?

I don't know for sure but I would avoid the temptation to turn the ignition on without the cluster connected.

I say this as I once fitted a USB adaptor to my head unit in my last MK5. I tried it out before putting the dash back together. The Airbag warning light came on as I hadn't reconnected the passenger warning light above the air vents. It had to be cleared with VAGCOM as Airbag fault don't self reset.

Having the cluster disconnected might also trigger it as the warning light is in there!

You should be able to remove your cluster and plug it back in fine.
Not sure why you'd want to though.

If you plug another in then you'd need to code it.

Jairm converted his dash to white backlit and popped it out without any worry and no issues with his.

We disconnected the battery each time it was removed though.

Why? Its like saying "I need to run some cable through the bulkhead, so I will take the engine out to make it easier"

Why worry, you need to do the coding for the camera so still need VCDS!
