DPF's
« on: May 17, 2014, 10:23:23 am »
So they seem to cause all sorts of problems if you read forums about them

The forums tell you how to sort out the problem if there is an issue .

Whats your experience of them , especially now that they are being checked on MOT's (or should be from Feb 14)

They are really putting me off buying a big diesel 4x4 , need the size but not the hassle . Don't do the mileage but the petrol versions hardly get 13mpg around town ! Having had a RR before !

my 08 gt tdi 140 is my first DPF diesel. It was an option on the 140bhp, but standard on 170bhp, so you could look for a 140 without DPF.
mine does mainly A road driving, done 111K, so far no problems.

give this a read.

I got rid of mine as it was causing a stutter, plus like yourself heard of the issues with them. DPF gone meant no more stutter. Some people get on ok with them but others have had no end of trouble. It does depend on what car you are looking at as other manufacturers manage the way they burn the soot off differently.

Well i was going to view/buy a X5 35d 2009 model on Friday and ended up not going due to the DPF issue surrounding them . I am looking for a big ish estate or 4x4 and that or the Q5 are on my list . Also i have spotted a 2010 Q5 2.0t fsi same money near me .
The X5 was attractive too as it already has a towbar fitted

Both cars i would like to buy but they are a bit expensive for what aged car you get , but then thats always been the case with Audi/BMW . So i am more set on the Q5 and add a towbar later without the issue of the dpf.......but then the Q5 will have the Ea888 engine !

I hate the internet and the way you can find problems with everything you ever buy !

What would you lot do ? I only do about 3/4k a year max

Get petrol

I have no idea why someone would even consider getting a diesel if they only do 3/4 a year!!

^^ I agree. With that mileage there are no benefits for going diesel  :happy2:

The benefit comes when i want to sell as the number of people that want a petrol 4x4 is very limited , hence going for the diesel and depreciation is less on a diesel too

Would it be a VAG family 4x4 as you can check the state of the soot percentage, last burn etc with vagcom. I have a Mk6 GTD 2.0 CR and my son has a seat Ibiza FR diesel which is basically the same engine and have had no problems, Mine has done 36000 miles and the Ibiza has done 52000 both are showing very little deposits with mixed town and motorway running, I would be wary of a low mileage town run about diesel. Like I say it's very easy to check if you have vagcom  :happy2:

"EDIT" Just seen the post about the X5 BMW it is then ...

Do you even need a 4x4 or is it more of a status thing?

Had the 530d and I got mine removed. But if you're not doing the miles, better off with petrol.

It's usually the yummy mummy's doing it for the status  :signLOL:

Ithink of it like this:

- Petrol will be smoother, nicer to drive, less trouble to own (no DPF worries), sound better. . .

- Diesel will be easier to sell. . . .

For me the augment is well weighted in one direction, unless re-sale is your main priority?
