Juddering at 60 mph + in all gears
« on: May 25, 2014, 11:40:22 pm »
Hi All

I've been here for a while but have not posted yet.

I'm at the end of my patience with my car - a 2006 stock GTi.

It has developed (over the past 5 months) what can be described as a juddering/vibration at all speeds above about 60 mph.  This juddering makes the car seats and steering wheel vibrate.  It sounds like the sound you get if you leave the window open when driving at speed.

I've had the following done in the past 3 months.

- new coilpacks
- new spark plugs
- new PCV
- new latest edition DV.
- new low pressure fuel switch.
- cam follower is in perfect condition

The car has been back at the local stealers who failed to diagnose anything and said the car runs perfectly.  I can't be bothered taking it back to explain to them and show them the problem.  They even took it on an 'extended' road test and didn't think the juddering was odd.  The engine light has never come on!

If anyone can advise on what to do next I'd be grateful.  I don't have access to diagnostic kit.

I've done about 40k in the car (it has 73k) in 18 months.  Its brilliant apart from this newly developed problem.

Any help would be fantastic.

Cheers
RGB

Had something like this in a megane coupe and was a driveshaft or both.

As above driveshaft... But also check wheel balance? Shouldn't cost much to have it re done. And might throw up a buckle?

As above, maybe wheel trouble or a bulge in the tyre or something silly like that?

I've just had the wheels balanced and checked the tyres for obvious faults - there are none visible.

It's booked into a local garage for some fault finding to make sure I'm not missing the obvious. The dealer visit was worthless - they wouldn't listen.

I had thought it my have been hub rings (wheels are 18" from Audi) but they are both present.

I'll post an update when I have one...

Hi. Where in the UK are you? I'd recommend taking it to one of the specialist places frequently mentioned on these forums.

I'm near Dumfries - can't see too many VAG specialists nearby.

At least the juddering went!  Just had the front wheels rebalanced last week.

Any info on what kind of driveshaft failure this would be and likely cause?  I do drive on some crappy B roads.

Defo would travel - it's in to the local I dependant tomorrow. When I spoke to him he appears pretty switched on.  I'll wait until he calls with the first diagnosis.

Any recommendations for a specialist nearest me?

I only changed driveshaft due to cv joint clicking on full lock

UPDATE!

Two front tyres are deformed on inside edges.  Tyres are well worn (circa. 2mm remaining).  A pot hole or similar may have contributed to this.

Mechanic reports hes seen this before, but given I've taken about 25k miles out the set I'm happy to replace slightly early.

Should have new tyres fitted this week - fingers crossed.

Thanks for all the input from forum members.
