Cheers Bacillus just seen this,  I need to know what reg your car is,  Im assuming your GTi is 54 plate Im also assuming that it is can-bus 2.0 and not 1.6? not an issue has I have vag commander which does 1.6 but dont really like using it for fault reading...

Let me know were you are in Leeds Garth and we can sort something out.

....It's much more important to get your car fixed and working right before doing any mods. Mods might just make it more difficult to diagnose your problems.

It's not 'the be and end all' to mod your GTI - It's an excellent car without any mods.

Re tyres - Don't mix them, especially on the same axle. It'll cost you much more than a pair or set of tyres if you end up in a hedge.

get the wheels re balanced...and don't the conti's 2 and 3 have different tread patterns??

I'm one of those that really don't recommend having different make/type of tyre on a car, especially on same set of axle!

The car is jinxed!!

For the first time in 14 years of modifying cars, I've had a car fall off the jack. It's completely destroyed the side skirt so now I need a new one of those as well. Gutted

I'm ditching the wheels anyway so I'm not going to bother getting them balanced. And yes the tread a patterns are completely different hence the reason for swapping the matching 2 to the front.

....For purely aesthetic reasons of course! :evilgrin: :wink:

But I agree. The ESP doesn't like it either and will randomly kick in when you least expect it - Not nice!

I totally agree. And I also agree with you on getting the car working right before mods, hence the reason I've spent so much already getting it looking like it should.

I've been out and swapped each front wheel with the spare and taken it out for a drive to see if there's any difference on the noise/vibration and there isn't so I'm stumped now. It may be wheel bearings or brakes. This is getting expensive....

....I wish I had bookmarked that YouTube vid of an ad in which a guy is working under his car and his Jack Russell doggie comes along and thinks the jack's arm is a big stick to play with and swings from it lowering the jack! Anyone remember what the ad is for so I can find it?

Generally I'm getting the vibe from your posts in this thread that you aren't giving love to your car. Perhaps she would respond better if you sat cross legged alongside her and closed your eyes and focussed on having positive thoughts. Candles and smellies even. :evilgrin: :laugh:

Quite the opposite actually... I've lavished care and attention on her since I bought her. I even spent 4 hours cleaning and conditioning the leather the weekend I bought it and the car actually looks mint (apart from the sideskirt now). Which is amazing considering it looked like sh*t when I bought it. The rear quarterlight had some scratches in it so I bought a new window from the VW dealer. I always maintain my cars regardless of cost. If I get so much as a scratch on the interior trim, then I buy a new piece... I don't like doing things by halves. The only problem now is I bought the car to save money, which probably won't happen  :grin:

I'm a complete muppet when it comes to hands-on with the car, but as of yet, I've never experienced a car falling off the jack. I presume you jacked it up at the reinforced point and used wheel chocks and applied the handbrake?

Don't let some of the issues get you down. I've had plenty of "mishaps" with the car and I've never regretted buying it - they joy of driving it (especially spirited runs) takes the pain away. Get it all sorted and then have some one on one time with the car and some B-roads!

Sounds like your car has a bit of history to me. I hope I'm wrong. The VCDS scan should show up the electrical gremlins but the wheel noise is a bit odd. It could be so many things as I know from experience that wheel and suspension noises can travel through box sections of bodywork and end up sounding nothing like what you'd expect and hence you look in the wrong areas!
Contis are expensive and decent tyres but you could have a wrong 'un on there or the noise could be something caught in the brakes, a wheel bearing or a host of other things. Process of elimination required. If you're changing the wheels anyway you will soon see whether it's coming from there.

Yeah, everything done properly. It was raining so the drive was slippy and it was as I was turning the jack, it just slipped on the ground. Luckily the wheel was still on the car and it's only cosmetic damage done. If I had the wheel off, it would have probably ruined the sill too.
