Its probably not something I could explain or something you might take on board, but putting 8k into a watch is a much smarter move than spending 8k on a mk5 golf and modding it really isn't it?

its absolutely categorically the opposite of "burning money" more like the smart thing to do/buy with some residual cash.

Yep.

Also, high end watches are a work of art. And just like art, you either get it or you don't.

the world would be boring if we were all the same

why do any of us need a Gti when a 1.6 etc will get us from A to B in as much comfort and almost as quickly with todays roads. We all like to be individual in certain parts of our lives so some enjoy 5 hours on a golf course, some enjoy cars and modding from your corsa to your 911 Turbo and some of us enjoy the ownership proposition of a work of art such as a painting, sculpture or timepiece

I really hanker after after a 911 and I can certainly afford one but cannot with live with the depreciation with so many years ahead of me and much expense to come - kids growing up, private education maybe, holidays, cars, hobbies for said kids etc yet I know that an £8k timepiece will pretty much not drop in value if the worst happens and I had to sell

Very true. However I do wish that, for example, Paul Gadd wasn't as 'individual' in his perversions.

Right ,I aint bashing the OP but the simple fact is the market has changed with the steel Daytona 116520 back in 2000 they cost £3570 and were changing hands immediately for £6k , Two price rises a year is utter rubbish and is dealer talk the last increase was june 2012 so we have missed four increases, I do a fair bit of trading in watches  so have to be clued up , The list price is £7950 in the Uk and £250 off would be a fair discount in todays market place.

The 4130 Rolex in house movement  they produced from 2000 is a amazing piece off engineering that has become the standard motor for all current Daytona models , Don't buy a watch as a investment but for your enjoyment

Your model was the change over year from 2006 to 2007 when the movement changed from 3185 to 3186 if I recall correctly  :happy2: so you should have the Rolex inhouse Parachrom Blu hairspring.

An interesting feature that you might not know is if you pull your crown out one notch and wind it a full rotation then count the number of times the hour hand jumps. 5 jumps = old movement - 8 jumps = new movement.

I'll grab my anorak  :signLOL:

I am sure it is a 3185 movement but either way they are bomb proof and as good as each other ,

My current watch is the Platona  from Rolex  weighs 10 oz  and is just perfect , I also just collected  the new Sea-Dweller 4000 .
