original clutch?
« on: June 22, 2014, 11:28:41 pm »
Evening all. Probably been asked before, but I couldn't find much on it... my gti is on 102k now, and I believe it to be the original clutch as I have every receipt the car has ever had. It feels perfect and bites ok, doesn't slip etc... I'm planning on getting the car mapped very soon, but I'm worried about the clutch not coping with the new torque/power. Should I just map it anyway and see how it goes, or replace it anyway for peace of mind?

Get the map done and see how it goes, may well be fine. Some peeps get slip at stage 1, some not even on stage 2+. Depends how hard those 100k have been. A Linear map will also help.

If its not happy then IMO go for a upgraded Helix clutch with a new OEM DMF, best of both worlds then. Only a tad stiffer than the stock OEM one (or at least it is on my Eddy).

My oem clutch lasted about a month before I noticed it slipping but even now it's only in 4,5 &6 gear when putting your foot down it slips a little.

I am however now fully concentrating on getting my clutch replaced with the above set up martin has mentioned to you ^ it is my next 100% on the to do list  :innocent:

A smooth one where the power/torque is mapped to come in progressively in a linear manner, a nice smooth curve. Will give you a much user friendly car with much more usable power throughout the rev range.

I had my car remapped at about 91K (original clutch) with just an intake, it's now on 94k and I've never had even a hint of slip from it, I would just get the car mapped but keep the money for a new clutch aside incase it does decide to go.

It wasn't rough at all bud, about 30%-50% heavier than the previous OEM one at first but it bedded it quickly and nicely. It was soon just a touch stiffer then the original one. It does inspire much more confidence now, when I go on WOT other things might be being stretched to thier limits but the clutch appears more than happy.

The Helix one I have is rated to 380ft lb I believe but can probably handle more. Niki had mine upto 420 ish at its max IIRC with no problems (before it was bought back to within my requested limits).

Doesn't sound bad at all now to be honest, 380lbf is more than enough for stage 2+ for me in the future.
Last thing you wanted was your new clutch slipping with 420lbft lol. Do you speak to Alex often? Wondering if the group buy is still happening, tried to pm him a few times in the past but he must of been flat out and probably gets 50 pm's aday ask for help

I don't bother Alex unless I need something doing (which I don't at the mo). Phone him, easiest way to get hold of the young man. The GB price was ok plus Alex did a good fitting/labour cost price too for the GB.

Mine stated slipping stage1 55k miles on original and I bought car off a 65year old family friend who done nothing but pamper it ! It's all down to luck of the draw and possibly a better linear map. I'm now sachs organic stage2 with Loba Smf and it's awesome ! Expensive but worth it !
