Mk5 GTI which Castrol 0-40 or 5-30?
« on: June 29, 2014, 10:57:58 pm »
I live in New Zealand which temp is around 28c max and 5c lowest.

For a 2008 MK5 GTI mainly road usages ( no track driving) ,but still want to unleash the power and possible do the APR Stage 1 only mod.

should I use :

Castrol Edge Titanium 0w40 or 5w30 ?
I'm planning to change the oil and filter every 5-7000 Kms .

Thanks:)

VW recommends 5W-30 over here.
I don't think you'll need  0W viscosity oil if you don't have below freezing temperatures.
Without traction power is nothing!

Thanks, strange thing is VW dealer here either say Castrol edge 5-30 or shell helix ultra 5-40. Would the 40 be suitable for this particular engine under load and daily driving ? Or should stick to 30 :)

However I heard that neither of 5-40 or 5-30 mentioned above are long life oils.

Only Castrol Edge 0-40 considered long life which should be used even changing intervals are short.

So I'm confused

Castrol edge 5w-30 is long life oil and should be perfectly fine for you. Do a search on here about this topic, there are so many threads already. All the info you need will be there  :happy2:

Shell Helix Ultra Extra is lthe long life oil, and would be my choice over the crap castrol.
Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.

Because they call it full synthetic when in reality it's not. They lie....  :happy2:

Shell is manufactured from full synth base stock while castol use hydrocracked petroleum base stock.

Full synth (true full synth) is a superior product.

I heard some oils are not recommended in some countries due to the sulphur in the fuel . Not sure which ones are not recommended for new Zelaand or Australia

I emailed VW NZ to see what they recommend which is suitable for here . I personally though for turbo engine 5w40  would be suitable as offer both cold start and hot operational condition ( under load) protection

So basically I want to know if the 40 offers better protection than 30 ?
