Squealing 3.2 V6 - Any ideas?
« on: July 08, 2014, 07:15:13 pm »
After finally getting my Haldex/Final drive unit replaced under warranty, my humble Golf decides to throw yet another odd noise at me  :fighting:

Does anyone have a clue what this could be? It happens when the engine's idling (once fully warmed up) and seems to be coming from the aux. belt area. I'm thinking bearings in the idler pulley or one of the other pullies in that region?

I've done a bit of 'probing' under the bonnet with a listening stick, and it would seem that the aux. belt tensioner has a nackered bearing.. booked her back into VW to see if it will be covered by the extended warranty  :happy2:

*Update*

Car went into VW dealer on Monday and was diagnosed with a failing water pump bearing... replaced under warranty, problem solved!  :happy2:

Out of curiosity. Did the noise disappear when you revved the engine and then slowly come back after idling for a while?

Yes! This is exactly what used to happen.. also, it only did it when warmed up/driven for more than 10 minutes.

My R32 started making this noise yesterday. Another thing to add to the list.

Just so you know, mines is a 2009/58 plate with just over 54k. The guy at the service desk said he thought it wasn't terribly low mileage for a water pump to fail, modern cars for you eh  :indifferent:

Mine's a 2007 with 71000 miles. Seems to be the mileage where things are starting to fail/break.
