diesel sounding GTI; cam chain tensioner?????
« on: July 28, 2014, 10:23:42 pm »
i should right now be enjoying my new (to me) ride     :driver:
but unfortunatly after picking it up from a nice private owner last week then giving it a right good spanking over the tops it came back sounding like a knackerd old diesel!!!   ONLY ON IDLE
i changed the plugs then tested each coil pack to rule that out!
then found out the PCV is prone to going so set to test that by blowing/sucking down the pipe to test the non return valve witch seemed fine  :happy2:
then to my amazment i thought id cracked it because the pipe pretty much fell apart
so after making a new pipe (using my plumbing skills) rubber/copper/jubilee clips i expected the problem to be gone witch did seem fine on a easy run from manchester-liverpool    :jumping:
but oooooh no when she got back the rattling came back along with a burbble from exhaust n the 2.0T tryna jump out of her bed
so a google search told me the cam chain tensioner is most probably on it way out!
my local VAG technic garage in ECCLES say if its just the tensioner im looking at about £200 to replace the kit!
anyone had this issue????? many thanks for reading my essay, fletch!
