oil warning light - keeps coming on??
« on: August 15, 2014, 10:35:38 am »
Guys - some more advice please if youd be so kind.
Had a quick search but nothing standing out.
My "check oil level" light" keeps coming on and guess what - the oil level is fine.
I had an S4 previously (and a TDI A4) that both suffered from faulty oil level sensors (bottom of the sump).  Is the golf the same?  If so I will get one for the next oil change and get that swapped too.
thanks again

Oil level? Billy basic but check on firm level ground!

Or oil pump as above

It's the yellow 'check oil level' light that is illuminated?

An oil pressure issue will throw a red light.

Low pressure will be cause by; level too low, pick up pipe or oil line blocked or fault with the oil pump  :happy2:

It could be the sensor. I had to replace the one on mine which cured it. You will also find it is tied in with the bonnet switch so it knows you have been in there to check. I knew the oil level was ok so used to just open the bonnet for a few seconds and close again to get rid of the warning then had the sensor changed during the next service.

Guys it is the yellow oil can warning and the message is "check oil level".
When I check the level (open bonnet) it goes off for a while. No red warning or anything to do with pressure I don't think.
I'll ask vw about a sensor.
Cheers

Owners manual confirms priority 2 warning . Yellow oil can.  It has a separate warning when low oil pressure detected (this text comes up in red).
Anyway checked with vw and they want £100 plus vat for the sensor so I'm going to try and check wiring etc is ok first.
Also got the part number so in can check online just incase anywhere else supplies them but I doubt it.
Thanks again!

This isn't always the case.

I had the yellow "check light" warning and it was my pickup pipe (I never touched the sensor) and the light has never come back on.

If I was you I wouldnt be leaving this.

Check light for what though? Pressure or level? Oil pressure and oil level are done by 2 different sensors. The one in the sump, which I changed only measures oil level and temperature.

The warning I am getting is for check oil level. Surely this means this is the issue or the sensor monitoring this issue is gubbed. Is it possible that the oil level warning is triggered by the oil pick up issue? If the oil pick up was the issue would the oil pressure not be affected?
How is the oil pick up pipe rectified?
Sump off job?
New sump gasket and pick up pipe?

Or should I be replacing the sensor first of all - ebay at £22.
Cheers again

To be fair, while the oil is drained and you're there changing the sensor, you're best getting the sump off and checking as per Jay's guide (sure he'll link it if I don't). Few hours work to fully check everything and potentially save your engine from death.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

For peace of mind I'll Change sensor and oil next weekend , and carry out some checks if someone has a guide that would be great! I'll try a search for it later though.
If the pick up pipe needs "work" is if serviceable or are parts needed?
Thanks again

Just ordered pick up pipe from vw so I hope to do this one evening this week (it arrives on Tuesday).
Jay when replacing the sump would Granville instant gasket be ok as the sealer? I have this in the garage already and it says it does oil sumps.
I'm picking up oil/filter/degreaser/brake cleaner etc Monday or Tuesday too.
Might as well cover all bases eh - it's due an oil change and for the sake of another hours work and £30 for the pipe.
Cheers
